Mangaluru, Oct 7: In yet another case of immoral rowdyism, a group of postgraduate students of Mangalore University were on Tuesday October 7 reportedly chased and one of them beaten up in the university campus by a gang of five.
The students had been to Ullal for an outing when the incident took place. The five accused, identified as Suhan, Sunil, Prajwal, Abhishek and Chandra, all from Mogaveerpatna, have been arrested by Konaje police.
It is said that Ramesh of Ballari, Shafiulla of Puttur along with three girls belonging to different religions, all studying in final year of postgraduation in the university, had been to Ullal for a trip. They went to Someshwar temple, Ullal Dargah and then to Mogaveerpatna beach. When the friends were playing in the water and clicking selfies with each other, a few local youths noticed them and came to know that students of another community were also part of the friends' group. The youths followed the students.
The friends grew frightened at being followed and got into a bus plying to university. However, the youths from Mogaveerpatna did not give up. They took an auto rickshaw and followed the bus, and waylaid it near Thokkottu. Among the friends' group, Sharifulla reportedly managed to escape. The youths then caught hold of Ramesh, forced him into an auto rickshaw and brought him to the university, and told him to show them Sharifulla's class and hostel room, it is alleged.
After bringing Ramesh to the university, the accused youths also allegedly beat him in the campus itself. The other students in the campus informed the Konaje police, who immediately came to the spot and arrested them.
A case has been registered in Konaje police station.
