Puttur, Oct 8: The attack on Rajdhani Jewellers by two unidentified men late evening on October 6 is suspected to be the handiwork of underworld element Kali Yogish.
At around 7.15 pm, two men came in a bike and opened two rounds of fire at the jewellery store located in CPC Plaza and owned by Tanaaz.
Preliminary investigation has reportedly revealed that Kali Yogish's gang was involved in the act. Moreover, a person claiming to be Kali Yogish called up a TV news channel and said that it was his men who had fired at the jewellery store. This has further strengthened suspicions of his involvement.
Yogish reportedly told that channel that he had demanded money from the owner of Rajdhani Jewellers, but thereafter, the owner stopped receiving his calls, and hence he instructed his men to shoot at the jewellery store as a warning.
Lasy year, Kali Yogish had allegedly issued death threats to two other businessmen in Puttur.
In his complaint, owner Tanaaz, who hails from Sangli, has mentioned that the firing incident was an attempt to kill him or his staff out of some grudge. Strangely, he did not mention the alleged threat call from Kali Yogish in his complaint.
It is said that Wayanad's Abdul Shukoor, K K Naser, Abdul Razak and K K Hamza are business partners of Tanaaz. In his statement to the police, he Tanaaz has said that he has no conflicts with his partners.
Apart from extortion bid from the underworld, the other angle the police are looking into is the possibility of the involvement of any rival jewellery businessman who might have got an underworld element to carry out the firing.
On Wednesday October 7, DySP Bhaskar Rai and team visited the jewellery store and investigated. Puttur town PSI Abdul Khader and team inspected the spot.
A police team led by SP Sharanappa is investigating the case.
