Joy Wright fell in love and married him because he was a vegetarian and non-smoker; He borrowed Rs 75 lakh and 7 years later, told her he wasn’t interested in her anymore
Hyderabad, Jul 25: Joy Wright, an American from California, was dreaming of an ideal life when she married Kancharla Venkata Rama Rao of Hyderabad, seven years ago.
She embraced the Indian way of life and gave up non-vegetarian food. She didn’t even mind mortgaging her flat in the US to give Rao US$ 180,000 (around Rs 74 lakh) to start businesses.
But her dreams were dashed when in December 2006, Rao told her he wasn’t interested in her anymore.
Joy Wright mortaged her California home to give Kancharla Rama Rao money
Fifty-six-year-old Wright, who landed in Hyderabad recently, says, “I want to see him punished. That is the only thing I want. Not money or reunion. There are a number of girls in the US who don’t want to marry or get fed up of their spouses because of their food, drink and smoking habits. I divorced my previous husband because of his drinking, smoking and non-vegetarian habits. I saw a husband of my choice in Rao when he said he had none of these habits.”
Wright and Rao had met each other in 2000 through a friend. Rao, who said he was a widower with a daughter and a son, proposed to Wright and they had an Arya Samaj wedding in Hyderabad.
In December 2003, Rao asked Wright for US$ 30,000 (about Rs 12 lakh), which she sent him. He asked for another US$ 1,18,000 (over Rs 47 lakh ) to start a real estate business. Apart from this, he borrowed US$ 25,000 (over Rs 10 lakh) in small amounts.
But in December 2006, he said he wasn’t interested in her and stopped calling her. When Wright offered to come to Hyderabad to work out their differences, he told her not to bother. He didn’t answer her calls even after she landed in Hyderabad on July 17. When she went to his Saroor Nagar flat, she found he had vacated it.
She finally went to the Saroor Nagar police and also plans to lodge a complaint with the California police to seek cancellation of his Permanent Resident Visa.
