He was speaking after inaugurating and blessing the air-conditioned Hiba auditorium built at a cost of Rs one crore in the vicinity of Hejmady Kannangar Juma Masjid.
"Religious harmony is the need of the hour and Muslims should set an example by living in peace and harmony with people from other communities," he said.
Minister of Wakf and minority welfare, Qamarul Islam said that Karnataka government has spent the highest amount in the department of minorities and is in the first place in terms of fund utilization for minorities in the entire country. "The state government in the last 2-4 years has executed several schemes of the union government under the department of minorities. No other state has utilized those schemes as much as Karnataka has," he said.
"The government has released Rs 2.5 crore for each district. There are 124 hostels under the department and 170 new hostels are opened. An amount of Rs 26.33 crore as honorarium is distributed among those who served in the Wakf board. Rs 50 lac was sanctioned for this auditorium, and Rs 25 lac was released in the first stage," he said.
Kannangar Juma Masjid president H B Mohammed who was responsible for the construction of the attractive mosque at Hejmady, ministers Qamrul Islam and Vinay Kumar Sorake and Rajya Sabha MP Oscar Fernandes who had helped in the construction of Shadi Mahal were honoured on the occasion. Padubidri inspector Azmath Ali and ASI Kamalaksha were also felicitated.
Udupi district composite Jamat Qazi P M Ibrahim Musliyar Bekal presided over the programme and conveyed his best wishes. Vinay Kumar Sorake, Oscar Fernandes, Kannangar Juma Masjid president H B Mohammed, MLC Ivan D’ Souza also spoke. Assayed Annaqaf Tangal Koteshwar led the dua.
