Kundapur, Jul 28: A S N Hebbar, a senior journalist and a leading lawyer, speaking on the occasion of newspapers' day held under the auspices of the department of journalistic studies in Bhandarkar’s College said that journalism was an enchanting field. In a democracy, the ruling parties were not afraid of any people other than the journalists. It was these people who alone were capable of scooping the scandals and exploding the truth to the people and those creating public opinion. In our country the courts would claim immunity from criticism, which they could construe as contempt of the court.
Hence the newspapers still work under restrictions. A journalist should have his own self, be capable of investigation, and should possess literary flair so that his reports are made attractive and inquisitive. Recalling a few interesting anecdotes in his journalistic career Hebbar advised the students of journalism to make the best use of the recent 'Right to Information Act.'
Presiding over the function Dr H Shantharam, administrative officer of the academy of general education, Manipal said that news papers should not be confined to reporting about celebrations, advertisements and the like only. On the other hand they could enhance their utility to the reading public by writing profound editorials and by reporting short, sweet and spicy news.
Raksha welcomed the gathering and introduced the chief guest A S N Hebbar; Prof Parvathi G Aithal delivered the introductory note. Principal Prof S Narayana Rao delivered the keynote address. Manjula proposed the vote of thanks.
