Mangalore, Jul 30: D Veerendra Hegde, president of Shree Kshetra Dharmasthala Rural Development Project (SKDRDP) and Dharmadhikari of Dharmasthala called upon the state government, on Sunday July 29, to take up a public awareness campaign on alcoholism. He felt that the government could spend around Rs 20 lac on the said campaign.
Hegde was addressing a gathering of people, those recovering from alcoholism and their family members, which was organized by the Jana Jagruti Vedike. The participants at the meet were those who had given up drinking after attending the de-addiction camps organized by Navajeevana Samithi.
Hegde informed that many people who were addicted to arrack did not know the reason for banning arrack by the government and added that although government had banned arrack in the state its duty was far from being over.
In his opinion there was a dire need to create awareness among the people on the effects of alcoholism. The Jana Jagruti Vedike should join hands with the government in taking up the campaign at the state-level, he advised.
