Jul 30: Renowned painter Raja Ravi Varma's original masterpiece has been listed on the eBay India website and art lovers can grab it for Rs 8.3 million.

Titled Winnowing, this striking painting is a previously unpublished work of the artist and is available for sale at the website - www.ebay.in.

"This painting has already been receiving overwhelming response from all over the world, including far-off places like Uganda, since paintings by Raja Ravi Varma are extremely rare to find as most of his famous works are in museums or national galleries," Rajesh Parekh, an eBay India seller, said.

Winnowing, an oil painting on jute, depicts a sylvan farming scene. This creation is assumed to be painted in 1891 and bears the same signature, 'RV', which appears on his other famous paintings.

An artist who is credited with bringing about a momentous turn in the art of India, Raja Ravi Varma was the first artist to cast the Indian gods and mythological characters in natural earthy surroundings using a European realism.

It is a great news for the art lovers. Raja Ravi Varma was one of the finest painters that India has ever produced. Most of the people have totally forgotten him but few art lovers. In fact, his death centenary was celebrated last year (2006) quietly. Our governments speak more but deliver less. That is the reason for his death centenary passed of without making buzz even in the world of art.

The government (both Central & Kerala state where he was belonging to) should have come out with something big to remember this greatest artist of our era. Many artists say his paintings were influenced by western art. However, Ravi Varma gave them all a clear cut Indian touch, which make them unforgettable. He was master in all forms of paintings. However, his oil paintings recieved more recognition than any other forms.

He was such a wonderful artist, even during his prolonged illness till his death he created many master pieces from his bed. As Indians we must remember this great son of India. At least we can pay tribute to him in that manner. I am happy that there are still some buyers & admirers of his paintings in this world.
