Udupi, Oct 17: On the directions of Udupi deputy commissioner R Vishal, a team led by Brahmavar special tahsildar Tippeswami on Saturday October 17 evicted about 200 people living in 50 shanties beside the national highway at Doopadakatte, Brahmavar.
Migrant labourers from several different districts had pitched tents and shanties next to the national highway at Doopadakatte and were living there from sometime. They have been engaged in the widening work of the highway.
The spot they had occupied was too close to the highway and hence considered dangerous, as any vehicle that went out of control would have resulted in loss of lives.
On Saturday, the shanties were demolished and arrangements were made to rehabilitate the labourers in Gandhinagar, Baikady.
Revenue officer K Shivram, inspector Anantapadmanabh, Harady panchayat president Jayalaxmi Shetty, vice-president Kumar, village accountant Sudheer Kumar and others were part of the operation.
