Demonstration before DC by CITU: Centre for Indian Trade Unions (CITU) will stage an agitation in front of the DC’s office on August 8. They will urge the central govt. to legislate on protection and welfare of workers, in the unorganized sector, stated a press release.

The DK district committee of the CITU will also urge the government to move a Bill in the next session of Parliament in this connection. Vasantha Achari, the general secretary of the committee has charged the govt. with not showing interest in implementing the proposal.

Quiz programme: Shikshana Parishat. Sri Ramachandrapur Math, Vittal Vidya Sangha, Vittla and Karnataka Rajya Madhyamika Shikshaka Sangha, Bangalore, have jointly organized a taluka level quiz programme on Mahabharatha for high school students at Sharada Vidyalaya, Kodialbail here on August 5. 

Wins second prize: Revenue Inspector in Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) Monappa Poojary has won the second prize in the 27th State Yogasana Championship held here recently at Nanjaraja Bahadur choultry in Mysore. 

The event was organized by Karnataka State Yoga Association in association with Sree Maruthi Yoga Kendra.

Election Mangalore Teacher’s Association: Ajith Prasad, head of the Department of Kannada, Dhavala College of Moodbidri has been elected president of Mangalore University Degree Colleges’ Kannada Teacher’s Association for 2007-08. 

R Nagappa Gowda, head of the Department of Kannada, University College, Mangalore has been elected secretary according to a release.

Felicitated ‘Chikitsa Rattan’ : Consultant surgeon Dr Balakrishna N Shetty was felicitated with ‘Chikitsa Rattan’ award instituted by International Study Circle in New Delhi recently. 

Dr Shetty is recognized for propogating new surgical field of minimal access (laparoscopic) surgery both in urban and rural setups. He is currently serving as associate professor at K S Hegde Medical Academy and is a life member of International Red Cross Society. 

Labour office to enforce minimum wages: Kanara Gas and  Allied Karmika Panchayat here, urged the labour officers to enforce minimum wages for gas distributors, drivers and office staff at the earliest.

According to the government notification KAE-43, LMW-2003, a minimum wage of Rs 2,674 should be paid to the staff, stated a press release.

Students benefit from bus passes: Nearly 11,474 students had availed of bus-passes facility of 60% discount given by DK Bus Operators Association during the fiscal year 2006-07. 

From 1981 to 2007, the association had waived money on the bus-pass to the tune of Rs. 10,59,58,318.70,  this information was provided at the meeting of the association here. Bhaskar Salian was elected as president, Sashidar Shetty as vice president and B P Diwaker as secretary of the Association.
