Mangaluru, Oct 21: Deputy commissioner (DC) A B Ibrahim on Wednesday October 21 inaugurated 10 kw solar power grid installed on the rooftop of the residence of MLC Ivan D'Souza in Valencia. With this, the MLC also initiated the first step towards making Mangaluru a Smart City.
Appreciating Ivan D'Souza while stressing the need for renewable energy sources, the DC said, "In the coastal region, there is ample opportunity for using solar energy. About 10 kw of solar energy produces 10 units of power. After personal use of the power produced, individuals can give the remaining units to Mescom grid thereby earning Rs 9.56 per unit.
He also said that the initiative taken by the MLC in installing the solar panel on the rooftop of his residence should be emulated by others.
Ivan D’Souza explained that during his recent visit to Boston and New York, he had found many houses installed with solar panels on the rooftops, and he decided to become self-reliant by using solar power. "In this campaign, presently 31 people have come forward to install solar panels on their rooftops. People must invest in solar panels which will provide power with zero maintenance. The installed panel will provide 5 units per day."
He also said that banks are providing loans for people to install solar panels.
District incharge minister B Ramanath Rai also appreciated the MLC for his initiative and said, "There is power scarcity in the state. The demand for power is more and we have to fulfil it. Thus, solar power becomes essential in the present scenario. The excess power generated from the solar rooftop can be sold to Mescom grid. The government is also providing subsidy for this."
Mayor Jacintha Alfred, MUDA chairman Ibrahim Kodijal, and MCC commissioner Dr H N Gopalkrishna were present on the occasion.
