Mangalore, Aug 2: Kasturba Medical Hospital here will hold a free hernia and piles clinic on Thursday August 2 and 3, stated a press release from the hospital.

Giving a brief definition on hernia, the press release states that a hernia is the protrusion of an organ through a weak area in the muscles or tissues.

Elaborating on the same it states that the bulge, containing fat, intestine or other tissue, can be minimized by pushing it back into the abdominal cavity. This will in turn flatten and make the hernia disappear. However in cases of non-reducible hernia, it cannot be pushed back and so must be repaired surgically as the bulge can contain intestine, which can lose its blood supply, causing haemorrage thereby leading to a patient’s death, in case it becomes tightly trapped. Here is also the possibility of gangrene setting into that area of the intestine.

Hernia is most commonly found in the groin region and this type of inguinal hernias account for 80 per cent of all hernias. The most common risk factors for developing hernia includes chronic cough, such as smoker’s cough, obesity, gain in weight causing an increase in pressure on the abdominal wall, straining during bowel movements or while urinating, pregnancy and increasing pressure on the abdominal wall, stated Dr Alfred Augustine of KMC hospital in Attavar in the press release.

Hernia can be treated either by the traditional mode of surgery or laproscopy whereas piles or haemorrhoids can also be treated by surgery and involves minimum complications with the development of the new minimal invasive technique, informed the press release.

Further the chief operating officer Dr Sunil Deshpande informed that a discount of 20 per cent will be extended on all the packages (excluding medicines) and 20 per cent discount on related investigations for all those who participate in the specialty camp.
