Nadiad, Gujarat, Aug 2:
BCCI President Sharad Pawar on Wednesday said the Board will take a decision on whether Kapil Dev should be allowed to continue as the Chairman of National Cricket Academy at its upcoming general body meeting.

"The Board will take a decision on the (Kapil Dev) matter", said Pawar while referring to the former captain, who had decided to align with the rebel Indian Cricket League (ICL).

"The Board's general body meeting has been called where this issue will be discussed among a host of other issues," Pawar told reporters after inaugurating a cricket pavilion at Nadiad town of Kheda district of Gujarat.

Kapil has said there was nothing wrong in joining ICL and had dared the BCCI to sack him from the NCA Chairmanship.

Asked if the BCCI will recognise any exceptional talent coming out of ICL in the future, Pawar categorically denied any such move.

"It is a simple thing. According to our constitution, a player who has played in the cricket associations (affiliated with the BCCI) can only represent the country," he said.

"Those who will play for the country, will either be from the state associations or on behalf of BCCI," he said.

Asked if the rebel ICL League was a threat to the BCCI, Pawar said, "In this country people are interested in seeing new and young players playing cricket."

"People might come for a day to watch retired cricketers play but they will not come every day," he remarked, taking a dig at ICL which has signed retired cricket players.

”I do not think that retired players will be able to generate the same interest that young players can," Pawar said.

"Retired players can play anywhere," he said, when asked if the Board plans to talk to some of the international cricket stars who were planning to join the League.

Talking about the Indian coach, Pawar said, “To be frank, what will the coach teach players like Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and Sourav Ganguly".

"They do not need coaches. They have played so many matches and have also made records," Pawar said.

"However, at times a coach is necessary, especially for the youngsters," he added.
