Mangalore, Aug 2: Senior advocate P Ranjan Rao after inaugurating a ‘Moot Court Society 2007’ of SDM Law College here at the College auditorium on Wednesday, August 1 rued “It is indeed unfortunate that the best of the products of law schools are taken away by the corporate giants. The students too prefer to become corporate wizards rather than getting into pure legal profession.”

Addressing the gathering Rao acknowledged the fact that though the gestation or journey from a pass out to a proficient advocate can be a tiring one, the reward it pays at the end is worth the wait. He exhorted the law graduates to get into the noble legal profession and enjoy the satisfaction that it brings along rather than be gobbled up by the corporate world.

Rao observed that most of the students who work under practicing advocates are very often not paid any remuneration, which is the major factor for the students drifting away from this profession, he added. The government has decided to pay a stipend of Rs 1,000 during this period but the Bar Associations and senior advocates too must think of working in this direction to safeguard the interest of the juniors, he contended.

He further stated that Moot Court Society is a good forum to prepare future advocates, however he cautioned that it should not become mere debate competition, as good debaters may not become good advocates. He wanted the moot court to strive for bringing out leading advocacy.

Rao called upon the students to speak out their minds as he felt that for an advocate his communication is his strength, without which his legal career will be doomed. Students must adopt three D’s to excel in life, namely dedication, determination and discipline, he added.

Noted High Court lawyer and alumnae of SDM law College Sandhya Rao was the chief guest at the function wherein she was also felicitated. Sandhya Rao informed the gathering that the Moot Court Society has played a vital role in her life because it had prepared her for the real life court situation and gain command on communication. SDM Law College principal Dr B K Ravindra presided over the function. Other office bearers of the society were also present on the occasion.
