Mangalore, Aug 2: The Indian Coast Guard, awarded Bikash Chand Mondal, a sailor, with 15th ‘Godfrey Philips Bravery Award’, according to a press release.
Mondal is presently serving as a sailor in the Coast Guard Karnataka headquarters, here.
Godfrey Philips Bravery Award introduced in the year1990 has honoured more than 1,200 people in social works as well as in bravery. The award includes medal, certificate and a cash award of Rs 50,000.
The award was presented to him at a function held at Hyderabad on Tuesday July 31 and a total of nine awardees were honoured, along with him. Mondal was chosen for the award for his act of bravery during Orissa flood relief operation.
VS Ramadevi former governor of Himachal Pradesh and Karnataka gave away the awards at the function attended by Godfrey Phillips Bravery Ambassador and actress Preity Zinta.
Mondal had also taken active part in rescue operations of DenDen ship sinking tragedy here. He was a native of Keshabpur in Midnapore district of West Bengal and is now settled here with wife and two children, a press note stated.
