New Delhi, Aug 4: Hitting out at the BCCI for threatening to take action against players who join the Indian Cricket League (ICL), former skipper Kapil Dev said the board’s hostility towards the rebel series stemmed from its fear of being overshadowed.

“BCCI should not be threatening players because they cannot perform on the field under fear,” Kapil, who is the chairman of ICL executive board, told Aaj Tak.

“The board is scared of ICL. That is the only reason it is not willing to talk to us,” Kapil added.

The BCCI has warned current players against joining the league, which is scheduled after the Twenty20 world championship in South Africa.

Kapil reacted strongly to BCCI president Sharad Pawar statement that the rebel series would be a flop as it would fail to find enough spectators.

“The statement that the BCCI president has made is shameful. If the board thinks that only the National XI can attract crowds, then it should stop conducting any domestic tournament,” he said.

Kapil once against dared the board to sack him as National cricket academy chairman.

“BCCI is like a king and I am its subject. If it wants to sack me from the NCA then I cannot stop it,” he said.

Sharad Pawar realises that if ICL sports illustrious cricketers, even if they have retired, they will automatically attract crowds in thousands. Naturally, if things go well for them, then they would automatically attract sponsorships and become a full time body playing all sorts of games the year around.

Naturally, they would be playing parallel games to the detriment of BCCI. Sharad Pawar realises this and BCCI, being the goose that lays golden eggs for all sorts of characters like Sharad Pawar, Ratnakar Shetty, will either wither away or become a body suffering from all sorts of ailments.

If ICL can attract cricketers like Brian Lara, Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath, etc., etc. who can still play cricket, then this is a propitious sign for this newly formed body. Then ICL can provide a strong challenge to BCCI and could be a threat to BCCI.

Kapil is right, Sharad Pawar has not played any cricket in his life time. Because of the popularity in BCCI and the huge money that rotates in that business he is there. Dirty politicians coming in to BCCI to make it even worse. When Dalmiya was there, India went into Finals of the world cup. when these politicians came into cricket,

India returned from the first round of the cup. Give cricket the legends to lead, who understand the game and who know the game more on the field than those stupid old people who used to just comment on whatever happens on the field without knowing the facts.

Its a Big ground the cricket field not the small one which fits in your TV Screen. time to throw these money minded politicians out of cricket in India, everyone will be happy this is the view of most of the Indians, you can conduct a survey, its a challenge .

It's quite natural for Ex cricketers like Kapil Dev to voice their heart's feelings. Yes, Kapil's observations are very very very correct and Kapil will always be Kapil .None can question him, as we all thought that his achievement of winning the world cup could be replicated Q.E.D.

As things stand, that's quite unlikely to happen in Kapil's own life span , although being Kapil, he would be the most gracious the first to Congratulate the next Captain who will bring the World Cup to India. But we should also see the support that Kapil is getting from other ex cricketers ?? More like M.A.K. Pataudi, Chandu Borde, E.A.S. Prasanna , G.R. Vishwanath, Sunil Gavaskar , Syed Kirmani, Robin Singh , N.Srinath and other ex Test stars .

Also not to forget the several Ranji Kings like V.V. Kumar, Raj Singh Dungarpur, P. Shivalkar, Rungta , Ex Ranji Captain Kasturirangan (Pitch expert) and several several other forgotten Ranji cricketers. This should not be a xerox of Packer & Co. Yes, the BCCI should be the domain of only Ex cricketers. ( Test / Duleep/Ranji) who all play with only a STRAIGHT BAT)

It is well known that honourable Sharad Pawar wants to open his fingers everywhere where there is money be it legal or illegal. Otherwise he would not have stood for BCCI president's post even if some one pushes him. Perhaps he used for this kind of act after serving a long time in politics. Now since the creation ICL he thought there is an opposition for his finges and therefore he must have scared that his plate will be only half full and/or half empty.

since whEn has the BCCI become a representative of cricket for the nation. I do believe that in the SC they said they were an autonomous body. This is the bane of sports in India politics and politicians involved and threats made.

The utterances of Kapil Dev are quite correct. Sharad Pawar is behaving like a mafia don.
