Mangalore, Aug 4: According to close family sources of Dr Mohammed Haneef, his family is believed to have spent an exorbitant sum of nearly Rs 3 crore to secure his release and to bring him back from Australia..
It may be recalled, Haneef has since returned from Australia after a near close shave at being branded a terrorist and then honorably discharged. Haneef’s relative Imran Siddhique had gone to Australia to secure his release.
Hameed Khandak, maternal uncle of Firdous, wife of Dr Haneef. stated that the family has already spent around Rs three crore, including the amount of $ 10,000 furnished as bail surety, to bring Dr Haneef safely back to India. Moreover according to him Haneef still wants to go back to Australia to work there and prove that he is an innocent man.
Khandak claimed that a minister from Australia had telephoned Dr Haneef and promised to restore his visa. He further stated that the Bangalore doctor is getting offers from hospitals in Bahrain and Dubai.
It is a well-known fact that Karnataka chief minister too offered to give him a government job. One relative, Iqbal Siddique, has come forward to build a nursing hospital in Bangalore for Dr Haneef, Khandak added.
However, it is understood that Haneef’s family is opposed to the idea of him going back to Australia and wants him to take up some other assignment. They fear that in view of the fact that Australia will soon be going for elections, Dr Haneef’s issue would be politicised and made an issue”, Khandak revealed.
