Bengaluru: HC stays governor's order on KU syndicate membership

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (SP)

Bengaluru, Nov 11: The state high court (HC) has granted interim stay to an order passed by state governor, Vajubhai Vala, withdrawing the membership of nominated member of Kuvempu University at Shivamogga, N Krishne Gowda.

A single judge bench of the HC presided over by Justice Ashok B Hinchigeri, which heard the petition filed by Krishne Gowda challenging the governor's decision, issued this order. In the petition, Gowda had said that he had been appointed by former governor of the state, H R Bhardwaj, as a nominated member of the said university on June 14, 2014, and that the current governor had, all of a sudden, withdrawn his membership on October 11, 2015.

Advocate for the petitioner drew the attention of the court to the fact that the governor had appointed another person in place of Krishne Gowda without issuing notification about the withdrawal of nomination of the current member. He claimed that this violates section 52 of Karnataka Universities Act.
