Magician honoured: The Mangala Magic Circle (MMC) felicitated Sadananda Kunder, who won the first place in seniors category in a state-level magicians contest, ‘Garudi-2007’, held in Hosadurga recently. The second place was won by Satish Hemmady. The third place was bagged by Prof Pangal Shenoy.
In the junior category the third prize was won by Shama Praveen Taj who was also felicitated alongwith others by the MMC president Swarna Sunder. The meeting also condoled the death of Prof Baas.
Older ex-servicemen to be felicitated: The Dakshina Kannada District Ex-servicemen Association will felicitate octogenarian members of the ex-service at Jugul towers in Mallikatte on August 15 at 12.30 pm. MLC Captain Ganesh Karnik would preside over the ceremony and Ullal MLA U T Khader will be the chief guest.
College Vacancies: Dr H Shantaram, president of Mangalore University Pvt College Managements Association and president of Federation of Degree College Principals Associations in Karnataka Prof Y Bhaskar Shetty have urged the government to fill-up the vacant posts in degree colleges with immediate effect as per their press release.
It states that though the government order for appointments was issued nine months ago, no time bound action has been taken by the dept of Collegiate Education to implement it.
An official ban on recruitments was imposed in 2001, after which an order was issued in 2006 to fill-up the vacant teaching posts. This happened due to much persuasion and efforts. Inspite of this effort the post still remain vacant in several colleges especially in the rural segment even today. Despite govt. official’s assurance to the office bearers of the association that action will be taken in this matter, till date nothing has been done, with excuses given, alleged the press release.
Workshop on Journalism: A two-day seminar on “Feature writing, reporting and advertisement designing” will be held by the department of journalism in Alva’s College, Moodabidri, at its college premises on August 18 and 19 as per their release.
It states Mysore University of Journalism chairman Dr Niranjana Vanalli and Magnum Intergrafiks MD Sudhir Ghate will be the resource persons at the workshop.

Free Yoga Course for the aged: Vishwas Day Care Centre for the elderly and infirm, managed by Vishwas Trust at Valencia Hall Road, 4th Cross, Mangalore 575 002, phone no. 2436681 will conduct a yoga course, simple exercises for the elderly, information on home remedies and health care for senior citizens free of cost every Tuesday and Friday from 10 am to 11.30 am, stated a release.
‘Bhajana Saptaha’(Puja Week): The 107th Bhajana Saptaha of the Sri Lakshmi Venkatesh temple will be held here in Udupi from August 18 to 25, according to their press release.
The saptaha will begin with a Deepasthapana programme on August 18. The Ranga Puje will be held on August 23, the Nagara Bhajane on August 23 and the Maru Bhajane on August 25, informed the release.
