Udupi, Aug 15: A silent march in front of the Service Bus Stand Udupi district unit of Student Islamic Organization (SIO) of India, was staged here on Tuesday August 14, demanding freedom of education for all, informed a press release issued on the occasion.
This protest march was part of a state-wide agitation launched by the said student’s organization. Further the press release declared that today there is rampant commercialization of education. Only six per cent of the students had access to higher education. Nearly half the population was illiterate. Education had become the exclusive preserve of the well-to-do, added the release.
Ruing the state of affairs of the economy the release stated that far too much importance was being given to the IT and BT sectors. Farmers were getting poorer. The country should have an integrated and balanced education policy, the release further said.
Convener of the Udupi district unit of SIO Mohammad Iftikar; former convener Hussain Kodibengre; president of Udupi unit Zia-ur-rahman; and president of Malpe unit Shoaib were present.
