Mangalore, Aug 18: New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) dock workers staged a protest and they set the deadline of August 31 to fulfill their various demands. They also threatened to intensify protest from September 1, if the government ignores their demands.
Their memorandum with the demands is as follows:
- to increase the retirement age to 60
- to add fifty per cent of DA while making salary payment with effect from 2005
- to make interim payment on a fixed rate from 2007
- to abandon the privatization of major ports.
The memorandum was submited to NMPT chairman.
AITUC and BMS labour unions also threatened to stage protest. The protest was held in front of the office of NMPT, Panambur.
INTUC sponsored Canara Dock Workers Union chief secretary Balakrishna Rai, Murugan, Aboobakar Jokatte, Aboobaker Krishnapur, Shivasudan Pillai, HMS coordinator NMPT staff association president P Sudhakar Kamath, N Ramachandra Gowda, Sadashiv Shettigar, B K Laxminarayan Rao and others led the protest.
