Mangalore, Aug 22: The extensive scientific research carried out on HIV have proved that the history of the syndrome dates back to older days than that has been 'popularized,' Dr H Jaganath, District health and family welfare officer said.

He was addressing the gathering during the inaugural of Advocacy programme which was held at St Aloysius College Auditorium in the city, organized by Hongirana Network of Positive People, on Wednesday Augsut 22.

HIV is more publicized compare to any other diseases that are equally fatal and deadly as there lies no immediate remedy like vaccine or cure for HIV or AIDS. The only known method of prevention is avoiding exposure to the virus, said the physician.

The unprotected sexual intercourse has been one of the major cause for transmitting the virus while knowledge over the concept of safe sex can only prove to be panacea, he added.

HIV can be compared to tsunami, as the catastrophes by HIV are no less than that of tsunami in terms of destruction. Students should try to understand the psyche of the HIV infected and thereby feel compassionate besides doing their best to help them. They should take the programme in a serious way, said Fr Swebert D'Silva, principal, St Aloysius College in his presidential address.

Seema, president and district network officer of Hongirana Network of Positive People said that the aim of the organization is to instill the confidence among the infected.

Kumar, president of KNP+ Bangalore, Dr Kiran, ART Medical Officer of Wenlock Hospital, Lidwin Lobo, HoD of BSW Department of St Aloysius College were the chief guests present.
