Udupi: Dr Aloysius Sequeira and Kiran Kamath MIT's Alumni of the Month

Udupi / Manipal, Aug 24: In a happy coincidence, two Konkani-speaking past students of the Manipal Institute of Technology, Manipal have been chosen as the alumni of the month for August 2007 by the prestigious institution.

They are Dr Aloysius H Sequeira of National Institute of Technology - Karnataka (NITK Suratkal, formerly known as the Karnataka Regional Engineering College, Suratkal) amd Kiran Kamath, a management consultant based in Malleshwaram, Bangalore.

Aloysius H Sequeira was born in Mangalore in 1957 and he completed his schooling and college education in St Aloysius College, Mangalore. He was awarded Bachelor of Engineering Degree in Electrical Power from Manipal Institute of Technology, Manipal in 1980. He later obtained M Tech degree in Industrial Management from the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai in 1990.

He was awarded Ph D from Mysore University in the year 2002 for research in Productivity Management in Banks. He was also awarded Diploma in Training and Development by the Indian Society for Training and Development, New Delhi. 

Dr Sequeira has presented and published about 28 technical and research papers at seminars, conferences and Workshops at national and international levels. He has conducted more than 40 training programmes for various groups in the area of entrepreneurship, management and technical education.

During 1995, he underwent training at the University of Huddersfield, England, in the area of Educational Technology under the UK-India REC Project. During 2001, he visited Germany as a Technical Advisor. He is currently guiding 6 research scholars for Ph D in the Area of Management Science. He successfully coordinated two MHRD Projects on Thrust Area and R&D. He has received 3 awards from different organizations for the professional service rendered.

Dr Sequeira has professional experience of about 27 years as a teacher, researcher and administrator. He has held different positions in National Institute of Technology Karnataka, Suratkal (formerly KREC). He was Director of NITK-Science & Technology Entrepreneurs’ Park and Project Officer – NTMIS Nodal Centre. He worked as Secretary, Mangalore Management Association and vice president, Association of British Scholars, Mangalore Chapter.

At present, he is Member of governing board of St Joseph College of Engineering, Mangalore, Fr Muller Centenary Charitable Society, School of Social Work, Mangalore, Karnataka Regional Engineering College and KREC-STEP, Suratkal.

From January 2003 to June 2007, he served as registrar of National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK), Suratkal, A Deemed University. At present he is assistant professor and head of the department of Humanities, Social Sciences and Management at NITK Suratkal. 

Kiran Kamath graduated (Elect.Power) from MIT in 1981. Born in Udupi in 1958, he grew up in the steel city of Jamshedpur where he completed his Senior Cambridge from Loyola High School in 1975.He worked in Tata Steel from 1981-1999 in Electrical Maintenance, Design and Construction of Township sub-stations and Maintenance Planning.

From 1999 till 2002 Kamath worked for Lafarge India Limited at their cement plant in Jamshedpur where he was in charge of Technical Services, Quality Management System and Environmental Management System. Since 2002 he is self-employed as a management consultant in Bangalore and has been offering consultancy on EMS, QMS, Energy, Safety, Performance Management System and CII-Exim Award for Business Excellence.

During his stint at Tata Steel and Lafarge India Limited he was recognized for his outstanding contribution in Quality Improvement Projects and Value Engineering Projects. He is a lead auditor for ISO-9001, ISO-14001 both certified by Confederation of Indian Industry and an assessor for CII-EXIM Bank award for Business Excellence. He was also sent to Halla Cement Plant near Seoul, South Korea for training on a Maintenance Software Package for implementation in the cement plants by Lafarge India Limited.

As a management consultant he has offered his services to several power stations of National Thermal Power Corporation, ITC, WIPRO, Gulf Oil Corporation, Alsthom, NTTF, Reliance Engineers Ltd. etc on Quality and Environmental Management System, Balanced Score Card and prepared companies for CII-EXIM Business Excellence Award.
