Pune, Aug 27: The expansive handshakes they had with actor Sanjay Dutt outside the Yerawada jail gate after he was released on bail on Thursday have landed nine constables in trouble, with authorities ordering suspension of one and instituting an inquiry against the others.

A constable who hugged Dutt, convicted under the Arms Act in the 1993 Mumbai blasts case, has been suspended, while the eight whose friendly gestures towards ‘Munnabhai’ of the silver screen were seen live on TV channels, will be facing a departmental probe, jail superintendent Rajendra Dhamne said on Sunday. As the actor came out of the jail gates following the Supreme Court’s grant of interim bail on August 23, a group of constables on duty eagerly sought to shake hands with the Bollywood star, sentenced to six years rigorous imprisonment by a TADA court, without realising the gestures could be seen as incongruous with their khaki uniform.

“These men in uniform, by their gestures towards a convicted criminal, have violated the decorum and prison norms,” Dhamne said.

The action against the ‘friendly’ cops at Yerawada jail came consequent to a directive by Maharashtra deputy CM and home minister, R R Patil, in the wake of public criticism.

I watched an interesting debate on one of the television news channels highlighting the case of the constables hugging and shaking hands with Sanjay Dutt. Simultaneously on the same screen they pictured the constable hugging Sanjay and a prominent government minister doing the same.

State and Union ministers have publicly come out in support of Sanjay and sympathized with him on the severe judgment meted out to him. Aren’t ministers also not public figures and need to follow the same rules that the police force ought to follow. ?

Why then has the government not taken any action on the ministers that broke the same rule ? Why are there a different set of rules for some ? Are the constables children of a lesser God ?

Sanjay Dutt, a powerful icon of Bollywood, like his father, is a personality that is liked by one and all. Munna Bhai, fits this magnetic character. While justice has prevailed, I am in no position to comment otherwise.

What I can comment is, while the hawaldhars may have broken the rules of the decorum ,I am quite sure they have not broken the decorum of their heart. Fair treatment of all in the rules of law must prevail.

Has Sanjay Dutt been given too harsh punishment for his crime? I am of the opinion that perhaps, he has, as no known harm was done by Sanjay Dutt while possessing the arms although he has tried to conceal the fact. Should favouritism, be shown to him as he is a celebrity? A certain, NO.

I do not think any wrong in shaking hands. Police are human beings and they have not shook their  hands when he was inside the jail. When he is released from jail means, he is just liker any other person and it is a shame that the police are suspended.
