Mangalore , August 27: Dr K S Keshava Murthy, president of  Apotex Pharmachem Inc, Brantford, Canada delivered a keynote talk on “From molecule to market-A chemist’s journey in global pharmaceutical business,” as part of Prof B Shivaram Holla Endowment lecture at the Mangalore University, here on Saturday 25 August.

Dr Murthy informed that global growth in the pharmaceutical industries have opened up new opportunities for the science and engineering graduates in a big way as never before.  The Indian pharmaceutical industry is growing in a big way and expected to touch $ 25 billion in a couple of years, Murthy informed.
 
According to him the regulatory agencies from developed countries are increasingly at ease with the Indian companies who have from time to time demonstrated their skill, expertise, knowledge and the ability to manufacture drugs as per the stringent international guidelines such as those of US FDA and EU agencies. The high levels of skills of Indian scientists, engineers and pharmacists are recognised by the world wide, Dr Murthy declared proudly.
 
Dr Murthy taking up for the pharma industry stated earlier pharmaceutical industries were considered as major polluters of environment. However that is no longer the case as now the wastes from the industries are no more a waste let off into the environment. Instead these are now being utilised for the production of by-products. 

The importance of process development and the role of having cost effective, safe and non infringing process in the success of selling generics in the highly competitive developed markets of the world was also highlighted by Dr Murthy.
 
Dr Murthy opined that most of the innovations of a chemist is achieved from good observation. It’s by hard work and trial and error methods that a chemist gets the final product. Career in pharmaceutical industry is full of challenges and human errors should be minimised, he advised.
 
Vice-chancellor Prof K M Kaveriappa presided. Chemistry department chairman Dr A M A Khader, Prof B Shivaram Holla were also present on the occasion.
