Drugs seeping into Goa via multiple routes: MLA Michael Lobo raises alarm

Calangute, Jul 2: Calangute MLA Michael Lobo has raised serious concerns about the growing drug menace in Goa, stating that narcotics are being brought into the state through multiple routes, making local youth increasingly vulnerable to addiction.

Speaking at a student awareness programme organised on the occasion of the International Day Against Drug Abuse in Calangute on Tuesday, Lobo highlighted how Goa’s status as a prime tourism hub has made it an easy target for drug inflow and abuse.

"Drugs are being smuggled into Goa from various locations using different means of transport. Once in the state, they are handed over to peddlers who ensure their circulation among the youth,” Lobo said, expressing deep concern over the growing number of students falling prey to substance abuse.

Cautioning that students aged between 16 and 22 are at the highest risk, the MLA said, “Drugs are often offered to students free of cost at beaches, clubs, or parties. Once they get addicted, they begin spending their pocket money to procure them. When that falls short, they start borrowing from friends and, in some cases, turn to theft to feed their addiction.”

Citing specific localities such as Arpora-Nagoa, Lobo revealed that several young individuals have been caught committing thefts to sustain their drug habits. He called upon students to reject drugs outright and be aware of the devastating consequences that follow.

The programme witnessed participation from local students and educators, and served as a platform to reinforce the importance of awareness, early intervention, and community vigilance in curbing the spread of drug abuse among Goa’s youth.
