Mangalore, Aug 30: Eviction drive conducted by Mangalore City Corporation has snatched away the livelihood of nearly 3,500 people, alleged Ivan D'Souza, president of Dakshina Kannada Petty Shop Owners Association here on August 30.
The petty shops eviction drive is not only illegal but also unconstitutional as even licensed shops were not spared, he said.
There are no objections from street vendors to get vacated but alternatives should be provided before taking the extreme steps like eviction, he added, blaming the authority which took up the actions only under political pressure.
The president told answering the questions raised by the media persons regarding the demands by the association on the behalf of the victims whose properties were "Cleared off" that commodities that were seized must be returned and damaged property must be provided back to the victims with compensation.
The president termed the actions and reactions of the drive as bureaucratic-atrocity as even parked vehicles were crushed irreparably for the only reason they were loaded with goods, this can be questioned in the court, under I P C and Motor Vehicle Act, he informed.
