Mangalore, Aug 30: Eviction drive conducted by Mangalore City Corporation has snatched away the livelihood of nearly 3,500 people, alleged Ivan D'Souza, president of Dakshina Kannada Petty Shop Owners Association here on August 30.

The petty shops eviction drive is not only illegal but also unconstitutional as even licensed shops were not spared, he said.

There are no objections from street vendors to get vacated but alternatives should be provided before taking the extreme steps like eviction, he added, blaming the authority which took up the actions only under political pressure.

The president told answering the questions raised by the media persons regarding the demands by the association on the behalf of the victims whose properties were "Cleared off" that commodities that were seized must be returned and damaged property must be provided back to the victims with compensation.

The president termed the actions and reactions of the drive as bureaucratic-atrocity as even parked vehicles were crushed irreparably for the only reason they were loaded with goods, this can be questioned in the court, under I P C and Motor Vehicle Act, he informed.

The concern of the Corporator is really appreciable. His demand is that the traders should be given alternative place. The best thing for the Corporator and his Party to do is temporarily provide place for such businesses on lands which they or their colleagues possess because Charity begins at ( own ) Home.

Regarding the authorities they should tell the public why they are unable to see violations on K.S.Rao Road as one reader pointed out. Is it because they feel this Road is not in Mangalore?

Job well done by Mr.Maheswar Rao and MCC. Illegal is illegal which way one can slice it. I just wonder:How Ivan D'souza came with lost job number? How about legal stores loosing the bussiness and firing the employees. There are legal stores selling the products in store while illegal street vendor sells the same products out on the street.

Here a legal store owner has to pay rent plus utilities, pay wages of his employees plus He collects VAT taxes and pays income taxes. By side of his store parked a tempo which sells products and cuts into the legal bussiness. And Ivan is helping illegals, being a Corporator.

If every poor and opportunistic person opens a bussiness on footpaths,Our God and Creator should give wings to next generation,so that they can fly from point A to point B inside Mangalore. Beside the above point,we the public has to suffer filth collected on side walks, rotted vegetable thrown all over, plus banana peels scattered,so that we decent public can trip and fall.

Dear Mangaloreans, look around our Mangalore City. Try to walk 100 yards on footpaths, you will run into Bhelpuri Man with his cart, then a fruits vendor sitting next Vegetable merchant. Then cloth merchant with clothes line tied accross with flower seller hanging flower baskets next to a Jadu man(magician)and his side kick Medicine man with dried road kills and vat full of liquid fat of these wild animals as home remedies.

You name it and you will see it on Mangalore footpaths. I love to see Ivan D'Souza with his family walking hand in hand next to Lady Goshen Hospital towards Central Market. That will be the day to come. Election is getting very close and Hearts will bleed and Crocodile tears will flow. Remember whom to vote!

Why MCC is not taking actions against Builders on illegal constructions ? They are only making the life of poor people miserable by destroying their livelihood. All citizens should join together and see that the poor people get justice.
