Mangalore, Sep 2: Public Works Department (PWD) chief secretary Sudhir Krishna has advised authorities of Pollution Control Board and New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) to take necessary measures, in order to empty the furnace oil from the ill-fated capsized Eritrean oil tanker, Den Den, lying few kilometres away from Tannirbhavi seashore, close to NMPT by the Arabian sea and also undertake salvage operations.

He was speaking while presiding over the discussion meet held at NMPT late last week.

Eritrea-based shipping company has been served with a notice under Sec 133, on charges of causing disturbance to general public by the district administration, following their failure in taking appropriate action, despite the oil tanker lying submerged in the sea for over two months.

The shipping company has consented to empty the furnace oil from its cargo hold once the rains to recede.  However, although the rains have abated to some extent, apparently they have not taken any steps in this regard.
