Bhatkal, Jan 8: The Bhatkal police have arrested two persons in connection to the alleged house arrest and torture of a married man at Gulmi here.
Abbas and his wife Zulaikha were arrested on Thursday January 7 for allegedly confining and torturing their son-in-law Muhammed Affan Shaikh (27). Another accused, Affan's brother-in-law Saleem, is absconding.
Affan was allegedly kept confined in his wife's house for two months and tortured by his in-laws, until he was finally rescued with the help of the locals and the police on the night of Wednesday January 6.
The arrest took place hours after Affan's family members filed a complaint in the Bhatkal rural police station. PSI Manjunath and his team arrested the couple from their house in Gulmi.
Sources said that the other accused, Saleem, left the town soon after the matter was highlighted in the media.
Speaking to reporters, PSI Manjunath said that a search has been launched for Saleem and special police team has been formed for the purpose.
The Bhatkal police appreciated the role of the residents of Magdoom Colony and Bilalkhand, Gulmi in helping Affan.
The locals expressed anger over the absconding Saleem, alleging that he had forcibly shaved Affan's head. Affan himself had said that Saleem hit him on the head with pipes till it started bleeding and then cut his hair.
A case has been registered in Bhatkal rural police station. Further investigations are on.
