Mangalore, Sep 3: Vice-chancellor of Mangalore University K M Kaveriappa informed here that the university has resolved to provide monthly scholarships to exceptional sports persons of degree colleges from this academic year onwards, on Sunday Sep 2.
Addressing the media persons he declared that it will be given to 13 students of fist year degree on the sidelines of a meeting of student welfare officers of colleges and the university at Mangalagangotri. The beneficiaries have been selected for the scholarships based on their performance in sports activities at the pre-university-level.
The university will pay a monthly scholarship of Rs 1,000 to each of them. It will be the duty of the principal of the respective colleges, to see to it that it is paid to the students. It will be continued in the coming years. The number of scholarships is expected to be increased next year, he added.
Dr Kaveriappa inaugurated the meeting of the student welfare officers of colleges and the university and cultural activities of the university. Addressing the gathering, referring to the incentive scheme, he said extra and co-curricular activities help students in securing credit, as the university had introduced credit-based semester scheme for degree courses from the previous academic year.
Alva’s Education Foundation chairman M Mohan Alva said performing arts of the country had a strong foundation and there is a dire need for creating good taste for Indian Culture in future generations. B Surendra Rao, dean, faculty of arts urged the students' welfare officers to keep their students creatively busy.
K Channappa Gowda of directorate of Students Welfare, said that the University is planning to create a special cultural zone. Moreover he stated that they would bring out a directory of cultural activities and of student artists. At this programme a provision will be made for honorarium to student welfare officers from the department of youth affairs and sports.
