Mangaluru, Jan 12: MLA J R Lobo on Tuesday January 12 laid the foundation stone for a mini park at Bejai, on the occasion of the 153rd birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda.

School children as well as dignitaries paid floral tribute to the portrait of Swami Vivekananda.

Addressing the gathering, J R Lobo said, "This is a good occasion as we are celebrating the 153rd birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda, a great saint who bought recognition and pride to our nation internationally. His concern over guiding youngsters in the right path is commendable. Children should read about his life history and try to inculcate his values and teachings. He was a great person who followed the essence of all religions and lived his life accordingly. He does not belong to any one particular community but he is a role model to all of us, irrespective of caste, religion or creed. I urge the local corporator and the city corporation to name this park as Swami Vivekananda park. I also thank Laxmish Bhandary of Bhandary Builders for contributing to develop this park."

Dharmavrithananda Swamiji of Ramakrishna Mission said, "Every human being wishes to lead a good life. But he lives two types of life - one, external, that revolves around power and money; and two, internal, that is about love, affection and emotions. He portrays his personality in different ways on different occasions. It is not enough to be gentlemen externally, instead we should be gentlemen internally. We should be gentlemen by our thoughts and actions. No one can change a person, the change has to come from within. Swami Vivekananda said, 'You are the creater of your destiny', so let us try to be good people and good citizens of this nation."

Former mayors Mahabala Maarla and Shashidar Hegde, corporators Prakash B Salian, Kavitha Sanil, Lancelot Pinto, leaders Vishwas Das and others were present.

    Mrs. Sheela Vaz/Harish Poojary,

I certainly value your opinion that the mini park at Bejai can be named after late Chevalier L.C. Pais, who was a towering personality of Mangaluru, residing in Bejai locality.

I also personally the illustrious, noble family of late Chev.L.C.Pais, spanning 3 generations, who are also achievers of the highest order.

Hope the people of Mangaluru decide to honour this great personality, taking the local sentiments into consideration.

I think he is good at parks only, does not know how to build roads with footpath. One should see the rush of heavy vehicles a road meant for light vehicles, I mean old police station road next to father Mullers hospital.

He has forgotten why he was elected. Parks OK but first roads should have foot path for people to walk so they may safely walk.

At what cost is it being built ? Is it factually necessary ?? The Bijai market complex itself is illegally built. It is not as per the sanctioned plan. Even the underground parking area has been converted into shops.

Every park, regardless of the size and location, will bring added attraction to any corner of a town or a City. The seasonal flowers will bloom and the greenery will also beautify the place throughout the year bringing appreciation to the surrounding properties and also in the minds of the people.

Parks will create new opportunities for recreation and pass time. Parks will enable families to group together with their children, small or big, and have fun and joy that money will not buy. Parks will also create a sense of peace and harmony.

It was so nice to witness that you gathered school children for the foundation stone laying ceremony. These children will remember the day when the initial foundation was laid and they will grow up with pride and share their stories with their children in the years to come. Children will also remember the good deeds and thoughts of Shriman J.R. Lobo. Those children might even think of creating a similar park in the name of J. R. Lobo fifty years from now.

All of the above can only be made possible with the magnanimity of a leader who has good intentions for the welfare of the people. Let the park also have a decent washroom facility, and let there be always someone who takes care of the place with proper safety and security. It's all for the people and to the people. "Namasakhaar".

There should be no hesitation in naming the mini park as Swami Vivekananda Park, which would be the appropriate way to honour this great saint. Also, let there be a write-up about Swami Vivekananda at the park's entrance as also, books on his life & teachings, so that Mangaluru's citizens, particularly the younger generations, get to know more about this inspirational saint.

Also, let Mangaluru's little ones get many more such parks, which are the only lung spaces in this otherwise once beautiful city-turned concrete jungle, which will contribute to their physical and mental well-being.

Mr.Alwyn Crasta : The stalwart of Bijai/ Mangalore and the Catholic Community was Chev. L.C.Pais, father of Chev. Clarence Pais, Advocate and Notary. They lived in Bijai for over 75 years. Chev. L.C.Pais was a well known Advocate and Member of the Madras Legislative Assembly. He has done yeoman service to the people of Mangalore in his days.

Swami Vivekananda has never lived in Bijai nor has he visited Mangalore. He did nothing for Bijai and Mangalore. So why should the new Bijai park be named after him ??

I state that the new Bijai Park should be named after Chev. L.C.Pais. Half of Bijai area once belonged to this Pais family.
