Mangalore, Sep 8: Upset at the verdict issued by the Karnataka High Court on Wednesday, 5 September upholding the acquisition of land for the coal-based Nagarjuna thermal power project, the Jana Jagrithi Samithi, Nandikur, has decided to approach the Supreme Court, informed a press release here.

In a press release, the executive president of the Samithi Balakrishna Shetty stated that it has come to the notice of the Samithi, that the division bench of the High Court had dismissed the writ appeal filed by the land owners Deju Shetty and others against the acquisition of their lands in Yellur village by the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB).

The land-owners then held a meeting with Balakrishna Shetty on Wednesday, 5 September night to chalk out its future plan of action. They were waiting for a copy of the High Court order and after it was received, the villagers would approach the Supreme Court to challenge the order, stated Shetty.

According to Shetty, the Samithi is of the opinion that the landowners have sufficient and strong grounds against the land acquisition. There are still three PILs against the project and the petition filed by the gram panchayat was also pending, he added.

The press release concluded by stating that the Samithi will do its utmost to bring a legal end to the project, as there can be no hope of getting justice from the present government.
