Bengaluru, Jan 26: 11 persons are from Karnataka among 112 people chosen for Padma awards on the eve of Republic Day on Monday, January 25 for their distinguished services in a variety of fields.
Padma Vibhushan awardees from Karnataka are- Sri Ravi Shankar from art of living and DRDO chief Dr V K Aatre, a renowned scientist from Bengaluru.
Karnataka has not won any Padma Bhushan this year.
The persons from Karnataka who have bagged the Padma Shri awards are , film director S S Rajamouli from Raichur, Hindustani singer M Venkatesh from Dharwad, Writer Dr S L Bairappa from Mysuru, Eye specialist Dr M M Joshi from Hubballi, Orthopaedic surgeon Dr John Ebnezar from Bengaluru, Yoga expert Dr H R Nagendra from Bengaluru, ISRO scientist Dr M Annadurai from Bengaluru, IISC scientist Dr Deepankar Chatterjee from Bengaluru and Madhu Pandith Das from Iskcon, Bengaluru.
This year's list comprises 10 Padma Vibhushan, 19 Padma Bhushan and 83 Padma Shri awardees, of which 19 are women. It also includes 10 people who are either foreigners or NRIs or persons of Indian origin (PIOs) and four posthumous awardees.
Four each belong to Schedule Caste, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Class.
Karnataka has bagged 11 awards with Delhi bagging 18 awards, while Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh have won 16 and 12 awards respectively.
'Padma Vibhushan' is awarded for exceptional and distinguished service, 'Padma Bhushan' for distinguished service of high order and 'Padma Shri' for distinguished service in any field.
Among the Padma Shri winners, 18 belong to various art forms, including cinema and music, while ten belong to literature and journalism.
