Govt praises MGNREGA as scheme completes 10 years on Feb 2

New Delhi, Feb 1 (PTI): As MGNREGA completes ten years tomorrow, Narendra Modi government, which earlier appeared critical of the UPA's flagship rural job scheme, today hailed the measure saying the achievements of a decade are a "cause of "national pride and celebration".

In a statement, the government also claimed that the last financial year saw a "revival" of the programme and announced that the focus in upcoming years will be towards simplifying and strengthening the procedures of the scheme and towards building sustainable assets to benefit the poor.

Some announcements are also expected tomorrow when Finance Minister Arun Jaitely delivers a key note address at MGNREGA SAMMELAN-2016 here. "The personday generation is the highest in the second quarter (45.88 crore) and third quarter (46.10 crore) than it has been in the last five years," it said in a statement, adding that there will be a renewed focus on sustainable individual assets to benefit the poor and vulnerable households under the scheme in future.

Marking the completion of ten years of UPA's flagship rural job guarantee scheme, which was announced by the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress President Sonia Gandhi in February 2006, Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi will tomorrow visit Bandlapalli village of Anantpur in Andhra Pradesh from where the scheme had taken off.

The UPA government had then described it as "a landmark in our history in removing poverty from the face of the nation".

Narendra Modi-led NDA government, which was initially critical of the scheme, has continued with the progreamme even as the Prime Minister had last year dubbed it a "living monument" of Congress' "failure" to tackle poverty in last 60 years.

"Do you think, I will put an end to the scheme. My political wisdom does not allow me to do it. This is a living monument of your failure to tackle poverty in 60 years. With song and dance and drum beat, I will continue with the scheme," Modi had said during the Budget Session last year.

In a statement, the Rural Development Ministry today said that the achievements of MGNREGA of a decade are a cause of national pride and celebration.

It noted that since the start of the programme, the expenditure on the programme has amounted to over Rs 3,13,844. 55 crore of which 71 per cent has been spent on wage payments to workers.

"Of the workers, the percentage of Scheduled Caste workers has consistently been about 20 per cent and Scheduled Tribe workers has been about 17 per cent," it said adding that a total of over 1,980 crore persondays have been generated so far out of which the percentage worked by women has steadily increased much above the statutory minimum of 33 per cent.

"Sustainable assets have been created linked to conservation of natural resources and overall development of Gram Panchayats. More than 65 per cent of the works taken up under the programme are linked to agriculture and allied activities," it said.

May be this praising statement about MGNREGA is a prelude to answer the Apex court & dilute the poor people's possible anger.

All said & done Ullu banaawing is no longer working.

Fortunately, so far no PIL on Rs 15 lacs.

Absolutely u-turn government!. If I remember correctly the exact words which were said during first budget while allocating funds for MGNREGA BY Modiji were 'even though I want to cancel this scheme, we will not do so!, we want to show to every one the historic fossil, a blunder by UPA which is total waste of funds and does no good to anyone'!!!. Does anyone remember this!?. Just like so many schemes and policies of UPA which were critisized severely during elections by Modiji and even threatened to stop many have been continued with more vigour than ever before!.

    Joseph Gonsalves,
    There you are!
Also, the present consumer price index cannot be justified in relation to the current fuel price (Intl. market –import cost)
What is the reason? Can anyone explain?
No wonder if someone still blames Congress's past rule. Let them scratch their head to understand why.
    Jai ho Modi Sarkar.

    Dear Flavian, Mangaluru/Kuwait,

Congress / UPA increased petrol prices due to heavy import cost for the crude oil in the International Market. It has reached up to more than $140 per barrel.

THE BJP AND THE CPIM HAVE MADE BHARATH BUNDH.

Now damm cheap crude oil in the I.M., reciprocatively Petrol prices are not decreased in the BJP/NDA regime. Instead prices of all commodities have been increased considerably. Citizens are crying by saying their Acche Dhin Kub Aayenge???!!!

We know that this Modi Sarkar is a "L" board Government. Need lots of time to Understand the policies of Congress Party which made India the Third biggest economy in the world. At 130 Dollars Crude per barrel Indian Citizens used to get at Rs 75/liter. Now at 28 dollars per barrel Indian Citizens are paying 63 per liter. In neighbouring countries people are paying not more than Rs 25 a liter. What kind of management is this by BJP Govt.We still do not know why Rupee is at 68 per dollar when crude prices have fallen so sharply. We still do not know why Indian Stock Markets are crashing daily when BJP walas says Growth will touch double digit soon. We do not know why BJP is unable is pass key legislations when it has a absolute majority. Better learn from the grand old party which built a solid India.

    Hahaha..Abki baar U turn Sarkaar...
They opposed Aadhaar card when they were in opposition, now made it mandatory for all transactions. They opposed MNREGA and now praising. They continued all the UPA Govt schemes with just name changing. So Modi Govt have no brain at all to introduce something new. Also BJP knows very well, if they cancelled any scheme which was introduced by Congress Govt, BJP will eat the dust in next election. All the policies and schemes will remain as it is. Modi cannot change it even slightly. Hatts off Dr.Manmohan Singh.

NAMO realized now what is good and what is bad. But his bhakths still showing their arrogance. Before LS Polls NAMO was campaigning for CONGRESS MUKTH BHARATH. But now campaigning, NO BHARATH WITHOUT CONGRESS. NAMO Govt continuing all the policies and schemes which made by the congress Govt. Whether the Parliament has to run or not is decided by the Congress. In short, this country is still ruled by the Congress indirectly. I think NAMO also trying to join Congress.
