Hockey skipper Sardar Singh denies engagement with UK woman

Updated

Chandigarh/Ludhiana, Feb 3 (IANS): In a tight spot after a young British national filed a complaint of "sexual exploitation" against him, Indian hockey team captain Sardar Singh denied on Wednesday he was engaged to the woman.

However, Sardar did not deny knowning the woman from Leeds.

"I will first see what report the police have written. Only then will I get back to reply all your questions. I was not engaged (to the complainant)," a visibly disturbed Sardar Singh told the media on Wednesday as he came out of the Chandigarh airport.

"I have just come from a game last night. I am concentrating on the next game," Sardar said, as he pulled himself away from the media questioning.

He is scheduled to participate in a match in the ongoing Premier Hockey League.

Sardar's father Gurnam Singh told reporters in Haryana's Sirsa district that his son knew the woman but denied both were engaged.

The Punjab Police is investigating a complaint from the British national who alleged she was "sexually exploited by her fiance Sardar Singh".

The complainant was the first Sikh player in Britain's under-19 women's hockey team, said Ludhiana police.

Investigations in the case have been marked to the Koom Kalan police station in Ludhiana district. Police station incharge S.S. Nagra confirmed the matter was under probe following the complaint.

The woman had complained to Ludhiana Police Commissioner P.S. Umranangal who marked an enquiry into it.

The woman alleged that Sardar Singh got engaged to her in 2014 and she became pregnant last year as a result of their physical relations. She said the hockey skipper forced her to go for an abortion and began avoiding her thereafter.

The complainant said she met Sardar in 2012 after becoming friends through a social networking site. She claimed they began living together after their engagement.

In the past, Sardar Singh had posted tweets and his photographs with the British woman.

But silly British too. The country is notorious for teenage mothers. Though its unclear what is the complainant's age, couldn't they both use some precaution ?

Granted, no precautions taken, she conceived, why did she agree to abort ? She should have well gone ahead and delivered and then made him to bear supporting the child ?

You bet - the law in UK is so strict that the Sardar would have paid through his nose !

You are right one way but Teenage pregnancies are very common in India as well, they abort here because of society fear, girls don't have courage to complain who made them pregnant ! British girl aborted because Sikh asked her to do so.India is not a saint country as you think. More detailed investigation will reveal the truth .

    Cynthia,

India is not a saint country - you bet ! Here not only teenage, unmarried but married women too are forced to abort upon knowing that she is carrying a female foetus.

I am very against the system of teenage girls bearing children because it takes a toll on their health. Bearing a child requires enormous amount of calcium and iron supply to the body which also requires to the teenager's growth. One cannot take double dose of these vitamins just because one is pregnant and its not affordable too. The result is anaemic mother-to-be with pre-mature births and high rate of infant mortality.

Well, that does not give right to kill an unborn baby - does it ? Therefore, the solution is precaution.

Well, now that both have skipped all these measures, let them sustain the consequences !

    Dear Madam,
Why blame the British where laws are fair enough? The report says the complainant is the first Sikh to play in the Under 19 Women’s Hockey Team in Britain. Apparently she too must be of Indian origin if not of British ancestry.
