Udupi, Feb 6: In an attempt to commit suicide, person from Shirva jumped into a river from Udayavar bridge here late evening on Saturday February 6.
Alphonse Fernandes (50), a resident of Sorkala, Shirva went missing after he jumped into the river.
It is learnt that a few youths who were fishing in the river saw a man walking over the Udyavar bridge and then jump into the water. They immediately rushed to the spot and saw him getting washed away.
Before jumping into the river, Alphonse placed his mobile phone, a silver bracelet and some currency coins and notes on the parapet of the bridge. This is how his identity was ascertained.
Katapady police and fire personnel arrived at the spot and began a search operation for Alphonse. The locals also gathered at the spot and some youths rowed across the waters along with the fire personnel, but Alphonse could not be found.
As it grew dark, the search operation was called off temporarily.
Sources said that Alphonse's son had got married just a month ago.
The reason for taking the extreme step is not yet known.
