Bengaluru: Leopard enters school, attacks people; tranquillised after day-long operation

Bengaluru, Feb 7 (PTI): A leopard today entered a private school near Varthur here and attacked people, injuring three forest department personnel, including a veterinarian, officials said.

The feline has been tranquilised after a day long operation, and the three injured persons, including a veterinarian, have been shifted to a nearby hospital, they said.

It attacked a man trying to escape by climbing a gate. As he tried to ward it off, forest officials fired shots and the animal escaped.

The feline was first spotted by CCTV cameras inside Vibgyor School at around 4:13 am. The school was shut today as it was Sunday.

School authorities immediately informed forest officials and police who rushed to the spot.

The leopard had escaped from the school premises during the day and was hiding inside nearby bushes.

As authorities were in the midst of operations to capture it, it re-entered the school building by scaling a compound wall, officials said, adding that it has now been tranquillised.

The scene of the attack was captured by television channels which had arrived at the spot to cover the operation.

Police had a hard time controlling the crowd that had gathered at the spot.

But for the enormous chaos created by the humans surrounding it, the Leopard would have slipped back to where it came from, in the early morning hours. The so-called forest staff and the police proved totally incompetent. Proper doze in the dart gun would tranquilize the Leopard within 60 seconds.

I kind of like when wild animals attack humans. Its like nature striking back at humans to destroying their habitat.

The Mother Nature knows how to balance itself. When we greedy human beings destroy the forests, which is the place of dwelling of wild animals, and when they are driven from their place, they enter the cities and other human dwelling places. Else where they will go? May be Vidhana Sauda next, as the politicians have destroyed the thick forest at Yettinahole? The animals will drive us out to the forests where there will be no stream of water nor a place except destroyed barren land. Only the Mother Nature has to teach us good lessons when it is attacked and destroyed, else we will not learn anything. Worst thing will follow in future. It will be natural calamity, or animal calamity etc. Mark my words and remember these words. Jai Hind.

Someone should have brought chunk of meat from nearby butcher shop and offered to the hungry Leopard and the Leopard would have forgotten attacking people. Then completed your mission without commotion.
Many years back I was in Ooty with family and noticed one monkey attacking a lady who was eating ice cream and some brought a stick to hit the monkey. Common the monkey became more ferocious. Luckily I was close by and my children were eating some snacks. Immediately I threw their sandwiches to the Monkey and he was more than happy leaving the lady and sitting in the tree relishing the food. Sometimes, we need quick reflexes to minimize the danger.
