Indians working in Gulf are a happy lot: Survey

Mumbai, Feb 8 (PTI): Most Indians working in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) nations feel secure in their host countries and are able to enjoy comfortable lifestyles, according to a survey.

"Professionals from India residing in the GCC nations feel secure, happy and fulfilled in their host countries," said the survey, 'My Yellow Brick Road', conducted by the Western Union Company, a financial services firm.

The survey, covering GCC member-states Bahrain, Oman, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, was conducted in multiple languages through various physical and online channels over a six-month period.

Of the 147 Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) who took part in the survey, 60 per cent ranked safety as the principal reason for their sense of belonging and integration.

This was followed by 53.7 per cent for the comfort offered by friendships developed in their host countries, and another 53.7 per cent said they felt right at home because they were able to enjoy comfortable lifestyles.

More than 40 per cent of NRIs respondents also felt 'peace of mind'. With an average age of 29, the NRI respondents said they had collectively achieved several goals, including personal savings (63.5%), a better lifestyle (46.8%), buying a home (40.6%) and paying for education (37.2%).

Almost an equal number of respondents said working in the GCC had enabled them to establish their own business and pay off personal debts.

Starting a family and being able to travel to new places were listed as other accomplishments, the survey found.

On the professional front, a majority (73.7 per cent) of NRIs in the GCC view their job as being 'very important', while 66.5 per cent declared that they 'enjoy it'.

Many respondents said their jobs complement the host country's progress and development by the roles they play in creating integrated community lifestyles, building infrastructure, educating future generations and enabling the country realise its economic potential.

"The survey embodies the experiences and aspirations of migrant Indian professionals who go to the Gulf region in search of better prospects and better lifestyles.

"Over time, these host countries have not only helped them achieve many of their goals, but also proven to be a true home to them," Western Union Managing Director and Regional Vice-President (India & South Asia) Kiran Shetty said.

Indians working in Gulf are surely a happy lot but not all of them. There are many who are suffering as they are working in bad condition, no good accommodation and working with low wages. They are surviving because of their hard work and they do not want to return as it will be hell for some of them.

On the contrary NRI's lead better life and are happy in Gulf countries, provided they earn well, live comfortable life save for the future. But that may not be the case with hardworking laborers. Even then they work, save and take care of their family back in India.
All are not lucky. Sometimes people know only to complain but seldom take chance to appreciate. On the contrary those who complain stay longer.
I am grateful to God, that I worked 35 years in the bank and still I am employed. I am here because I feel comfortable. This is not a permanent place and I have to go back to my home country one day but for the time being I happy with my profession and living with my family.

As an UAE expat,I am blessed to stay here.I can eat anything as per my wish.UAE makes me feel safe.No backbites or jealousness as we are away from relatives. Here everyone minds their own business.Me,my family and outing is our favourite routine.Once in a month we have ladies day or night out.Women earn lots of respect here.Whole society is disciplined.
I HAVE NEVER SEEN ANY RULER SPITTING VENOM ON OTHER OR their cabinet members.Monarchy is highly civilised. And I am proud to live where the KIng is a real KING and no puppet of others. My foster country recently sent its soldiers to fight against yemen Houthi militants. Now they have announced ,they are sending troops to syria to fight against ISIS.If you look in the world map ,you can hardly see UAE.But its achievements and charitable work is beyond expectations.THis is special feature of UAE.
UAE IS MOST TOLERANT TOWARDS OTHER COMMUNITY AND THEIR PRACTICES.
Some years back when India won world cup.THe whole of Bur dubai roads where made vacant just to make Indians to celebrate this victory.Next day the whole road was dirty with coke tins, bottles etc.It was dubai officers along with cleaners cleaned the streets.

A biased survey based on a particular category of Indians – a small community of qualified, highly paid professionals – which doesn’t reflect the true picture of Indians in GCC. Did they conduct such survey among the unskilled workers, construction labourers, domestic servants, drivers, etc. who far outnumber those professionals. Have they seen their working and living conditions? How can they generalize Indians are happy in GCC countries?

    Dear Manjuji,
Hitherto I had agreed with all of your comments but in this case I am sorry to disagree. So far Mr. Modi or even the Indian Govt. has got nothing to do with the outcome of the survey conducted by Western Union. A small bunch of Indians enjoying and living a luxurious life in UAE is not due to Modi effect or the efforts of our govt. But henceforth we expect Mr. Modi and his Govt. to act and to take concrete steps to prevent exploitation of semiskilled and unskilled workers as well as domestic servants in GCC and ensure that all of them get their due benefits and entitlements. Merely online registering and maintaining records of foreign employers and workers will not solve problems until and unless there is action from top to bottom.

As per the survey,it is come to the conclusion that Indians working in Gulf are a happy lot and safe. This is applicable only to high paid professionals, doctors, engineers and office executives, managers, supervisors and this is one side of the stories.Yes,indeed for them it aptly suits. They can enjoy, socialize, can save and amass wealth back home, spend the way they want, give adequate and quality education to their wards and can be happy to the maximum extent. This is only one side of the coin.Surveyor failed to see or survey the other side of the coin. There are many NRIs, especially laborers, low grade employees, who are struggling to live respectably, they can't even have their proper accommodation, proper and quality food like the surveyors, living in shanties without proper water, light, toilets and other basic facilities. They can't even remit the money to their families back home, give proper education, maintain their house properly as they are not receiving their salary on time.Dear Surveyor, you may be lucky enough to do whatever you want to do but think about the people who are below poverty line.Don't project only the bright side of your life and boast yourself.

This survey is been conducted on professionals who drawn a heavy pay pack. Ask a middle class person, who finds it very difficult to meet the ends. A normal middle class drawing an average salary has his family with him with 2 kids, then he hardly has any peace of mind. Main share of the income goes on to pay with the high rents and school peace. With the current cost of living, a normal middle class is forced to send back his family back home, so that he can keep them safe. Even the bachelors are facing such situation and find the pinch to make a good saving. Somehow they manage to send a small share what is left back in their hands after paying out for all the expenses, so that their family can lead a peaceful life. There is no better place than india to live in. May it be in terms of living style, cost, education, travel etc..etc..

Yes, I agree that luxury is far cheap in GCC while compared to india, and this is only due to currency values. If india gets its currency strong, then who would like to stay in GCC ? I have lived 60% of my life in GCC and have seen over the years how much savings can be done. It is only now that we are trying to save a bit due to currency value, but at the same time an additional part of the saving is been gulped up by the raise in cost in india also. All in all, the survey is totally wrong and has not been carried out in the best opinion of normal middle class person. What benefits does an expat gets here ?? Most of the rules and regulations stands in favour of the employer. There no rule that income should be raised in proportion to the costs. But this is benefited only to those person who get a big pay pack or are employed in govt sectors. Private sector employees hardly get any benefits.

They struggle in the GCC to repay the loans they have take to pay the agents in India who have taken them to the GCC. Their living conditions are bad in the GCC and the employer is not interested. This survey, the respondents must be with good jobs and getting a handsome package. Why do we have many unnatural deaths among the Indians in the GCC ?

This survey is conducted on professionals and does not reflect NRIs as a whole. It is one sided. It is akin to asking the residents of South Mumbai, the constituency that pays highest tax in India, of their view on India, Naturally they will have a very good life style in India, but that does not represent total population of India as a whole. Since it is not a UN survey or survey in the proper method of statistical sampling, other side of the story need not be the same.

The Survey undertaken about the opinion cherished by the Indians in the GCC countries is very interesting and also thought provoking. As much as most of the Indians feel content with their life in the GCC countries and also their work work performance, it will be nice to research on the opinion of the host countries as to their perception about the Indian expatriates residing in the Gulf region.

Having been in the Gulf region for nearly three decades, three decades ago, and having had the opion of dozens of our family members who have also spent considerable time throughout the Gulf region, including Iran, our group consensus of opinion was as follows:-

    1) Majority of the Indians serving the in the GCC countries have done best justice towards the Arab hosts. Our loyalty, our hard work and our integrity has always in the top tank as compared to all the other expatriates.

    2) Most of the attributes for our satisfaction should go the the British because it is the British that favored Indians wherever they went throughout the Gulf including Iran. The British Petroleum trained the Indians, and wherever the British penetrated in the Persian Gulf region including Iran, Iraq, Abadan, the Trucial States and also Bahrain and Kuwait, Indians were the most favored expatriates they preferred, and the mutual loyalty continued.

    4) The loyalty and satisfaction between the British and the Indians not only focused towards the Educated and experienced, but even the lower category such as Cooks, Butlers, Waiters and many others who have served their Superiors with loyalty, sincerely and kindness.

    4) The British favoritism towards the Indians also quickly spread into Americans and therefore thousands of Indians from all categories were recruited by Aramco in Saudi Arabia.

    5) The Arab experience towards Indians also became a favorable topic, and it is a highly recognized opinion that millions of Indian expatriates have given the best of loyal work to the Arabs and the Persians.
