: A Manipal University Volunteer Services Corps (MUVSC) has been launched by the directorate of volunteer services, a newly opened venture of the Manipal University (MU), stated informed sources.

The Volunteer Services Corps is a social service unit of the Manipal University. The MUVSC would be similar to the National Service Corps (NSS). All persons affiliated to the Manipal University, who wish to serve the community free of cost, will be registered as its members.

According to the coordinator of MUVSC and public relations officer of MU Baboons the volunteer service corps is the brain-child of the MU vice chancellor Dr Rajasekharan P Warier. Its membership will comprise of students from educational institutions affiliated to MU, staff and retired staff. 

Already around 100 members have been registered. Further, according to him, a membership drive will be initiated during the ‘Volunteer Services ‘Week’ starting from September 18 to 23.

VSC members would serve as attendants for poor and needy patients at hospitals, as volunteers during emergencies. They would also participate in the campus development activities. Moreover in the beginning identity cards would be provided to the members.

The launch of MUVS is scheduled for September 17, at Shirdi Saibaba hospital, Manipal at 5.30 pm. The pro-chancellor of MU Dr H S Ballal, its registrar Dr H Vinod Bhat are expected to be present on the occasion.
