Panaji, Sep 16: Fourteen undertrials escaped from a Margao judicial lock-up taking advantage of an open gate during a Ganesh Chaturthi function, police said on Sunday.

The incident took place on Saturday night when the undertrials were brought to the main lobby to participate in the Ganesh Chaturthi prayers, they said.

Taking advantage of the opportunity, 14 of the 60 undertrials lodged in the lock-up fled.

Police said that three among them had been charged with murder, two with robbery, one with dacoity and others with petty crimes.

Police are combing the entire South Goa district and the borders have been sealed to nab the undertrials.
