Manmohan great as FM; reforms stopped when he became PM: Jaitley

Mumbai, Feb 14 (PTI): A day after his 'policy paralysis' jibe at Manmohan Singh, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley today said the Congress leader did a "great job" as a Finance Minister but reforms process stopped after he became the Prime Minister.

"To be fair to him (Singh), he did a great job as an FM in initiating reforms. That process stalled when he became the PM," Jaitley said.

He was speaking at the CNN Asia Business Forum held on the sidelines of the 'Make In India Week' that began here yesterday.

Yesterday, Jaitley had hit back at Singh for stating in an interview that the Modi government was not reaching out to the Opposition and not doing enough to move up the country's economy.

In a Facebook post, Jaitley had said the transition from the UPA to NDA government has been from "policy-paralysis" to a global "bright-spot" while Congress' stand on the crucial GST Bill has been motivated by "real politics".

Jaitley had further said that unlike in the UPA regime when policies were framed from Congress headquarters at 24, Akbar Road, in the NDA government Prime Minister Narendra Modi has the last word.

"Former Presidents and Prime Ministers rarely speak, but when they do, the nation should listen to them with rapt attention. They represent the wisdom of the nation.

"They are expected to be non-partisan, render constructive advice and at times send a powerful message even to their own political party to act in a broader national interest," he had said.

Singh had said that there was a crisis of confidence in the government and that Prime Minister Modi must give "every Indian" the confidence that he cares for people's well-being.

Jaitley said the key objective of the government is to ensure that India exploits its full potential in economic growth.

"Now that second generation reforms is in the process which started less than two years ago and that is the process which the government will continue.

"At the same time, the principle object would be to make sure that India realises its potential as far as economic growth is concerned, so as to enable it to bring down significantly the poverty levels," Jaitley said.

Mr. Jaitley, you too were great when in opposition! You had said in parliament that IT exemption can be raised easily to 5lakhs without any significant hit to tax collection and also petro products can be given at much lower prices! Today in ruling party you are exactly doing opposite! That's why people defeated you in Lok Sabha elections but unfortunately your masters made you FM! Then how can you be a people's FM!?. Don't critisize MMS, he was excellent as FM and PM and you're not even 1% of his charisma and capabilities!

It is sad to descride a Prime Minister who is honest.

Guys look at Mr. Modi he visited so many countries in 19 months why our FDI is still less. Why our currency is loosing in global market even the oil prices touched to $40? Despite having so 280 Plus own seats of BJP in Lokhasabha BJP couldn't even pass the GST bills. During Manmohan singh He stood his ground against all opposite parties on Nuclear issue. I agree second terms was not great show there all lot of things againts him. Mr. Raja (I only say he took bride but his policy was good as a telecom minister that is the reason we have 1 rupee moblile calls no STD required, No Landline.. Raja was bad for accepting bribe..)Again Mr. Singh handlled very well with so many small parties in UPA. Against him Global meltdown 2008 paries with corrupt people, high oil prices and son on..

If the BJP is so good why they failed in Bihar, again in Gujrath local elections recently. Why intollorence? Why one religion is fighting other?

All readers... forget abut the parties once the election is over..! Fight for the causes. In India we have 24% Below poverty is there.. It means we have 24 people in 100 do not have something to eat..! Also vote the right people who will do something for India..!

As a Indian I failed MR. Manmohan Singh without giving him full Mandate.
Mr. Manmohan Singh I salute you..!

UPA was a coalition Govt. So they had to listen to other ally parties advise, they had to take blame for corruption happend by their ally party... so many negative things were there to balance. But NDA is not like that. They have clear mandate, they can bring reforms to improve economic condition of the country. But, what they are doing? Even during last Recession, MMS managed condition so well that, India did not feel any heat... What is happening now???

Mr. Jaitley, Dr. Singh has proved his capabilities as a F.M., even during his tenure as PM, the oil prices was raised from $28 to a peak of $147. He was still able to manage the ship keeping the prices afloat at a maximum of Rs. 85 /litre at the peak, there were losses accounted for by the Oil Co’s, who normally reap bumper profits, but as an economists, he tried to inflict minimum damage to the consumers. The reason I gave this example, India is an net oil importing country, we import 79% of oil to meet our demands, increase in oil prices, runs down our reserves drastically, inflation touches the roof, etc. We have passed this stage at least for the moment. But from mid- 2014, when oil prices have fallen from a peak of $106 to an average of $30 today a fall of 350%, the benefits to consumers have been minimal to a maximum of 20%, of course you can’t reduce prices by 300%, but you need to inform the country on a regular basis the cess, taxes, VAT etc .,the windfall income you generate by the drastic in prices should shore up our foreign reserves and help us to stabilize the value of the rupee which has fallen by 17% from May 2014 to date. Under PM Modi and your leadership, the stocks have performed badly, rupee is tumbling, and manufacturing sector has performed poorly. Its still early days , you guys still have over 3 years to turn around things. PM Singh was voted out for corruption and poor reforms. People voted for you for ACCHE DIN, remember your slogan for its entrenched in the country’s mind.

Has he shown anything credible after he became FM? Still groping in the dark trying to understand how MMS did all the good he did!!!
It is contagious from PM to Ministers to blame others especially the former Govt. for their own failures to function in their capacities.

    VERY TRUE.

MMS WAS BETTER WITH PVN. THEY REALLY EARNED RESPECT OF PEOPLE OF INDIA FOR UPLIFTING THEM FROM FINANCIAL DEBACLE.

THE DAY CONGRESS SIDELINED PVN, MMS SHOULD ALSO HAVE LEFT THE PARTY. EVEN TODAY PEOPLE WOULD HAVE RESPECTED HIM ACROSS THE PARTY LINES.

BUT UNFORTUNETLY HE DECIDED TO GO WITH MOTHER AND SON AND BECAME THEIR PUPPET AND LOST ALL THE CREDIBILITY HE EARNED OVER THE YEAR.
