Bantwal, Feb 16: A candidate from SDPI contesting the upcoming taluk panchayat elections from Sajipamooda here was attacked with weapons by a group of miscreants on the night of Monday February 15.
The miscreants who came in bikes attacked Zakaria Malik (30), a resident of Kolake, Sajipamooda at a spot between Marnabail and Bogodi.
Zakaria was riding from Kolake to his in-laws' house in Bantwal when four persons came in two bikes and attacked him with swords and sped away.
Zakaria who sustained deep injuries in his left arm was admitted to a private hospital in Thumbay.
He had filed his nomination for the upcoming taluk panchayat elections from Sajipamooda as SDPI candidate. The entire day he was busy with canvassing and by evening, he left for his in-laws' house.
As news spread, hundreds of party activists gathered in front of the hospital in Thumbay.
Bantwal circle inspector Belliappa, Bantwal town SI Nandakumar, Bantwal rural SI Rakshith A K and other police personnel visited the incident spot as well as the hospital and registered a case.
