Mangaluru, Feb 19: The district health and family welfare, Dakshina Kannada will conduct the second phase of pulse polio immunization programme in the district on Sunday February 21.

The polio immunization will be administered to children below five years of age, informed U T Khader, state health and family welfare minister in a press meet at Circuit House here on Friday February 19.

"In the first phase which was held on January 17, a total of 1,69,256 that is 100.18% children were immunized against our estimation of 1,68,947.

"Now, as per the direction of the central and the state governments, the second phase of pulse polio programme will be conducted on February 21. On the first day of the programme, pulse polio will be administered in booths and during the next two to three days by visiting each house, so that polio drops are given to all children below five years of age," Khader said.

"There will be 921 vaccination centres, eight mobile teams, and 28 transit vaccination units. A total of 3,828 vaccine providers and 192 supervisors have been assigned for the job.

"Polio vaccination centres are district health and family welfare offices, taluk health centre offices, public hospitals, city family welfare centres, community health centres, and primary health care centres," he added.

"Even though the last case of pulse polio found in the district was in 1999 and in the state in 2007, it is better to adminisiter the vaccine even if it is a repetition. I request the parents to bring their children to the pulse polio booths without fail," he urged.

District health officer Dr Ramakrishna and district surgeon Dr Rajeshwari Devi were present.
