Mangaluru: 386 trees to be chopped for proposed DC's office at Padil?

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (DV)

Mangaluru, Feb 23: A meeting was held between the forest department and environmentalists here on Tuesday February 23 on the proposed deputy commissioner's office at Padil. The meeting was chaired by DC A B Ibrahim.

During the meeting, a discussion was held on the likelihood of chopping down 386 trees, which the forest department said could be done as the area did not come under reserved forest area, and to which the environmentalists opposed.

"In a survey conducted by the forest regional committee for the proposed DC complex at Padil, it was found that the complex did not come under the reserved forest area nor was the area included in the definition and criteria of deemed forests. The committee had identified 386 trees of which 66 were natural and 320 planted trees and 38 are coconut trees and eight are bamboo shrubs," said deputy conservator of forest (DCF) Dr Hanumanthappa.

"The entire building will come up in 5.44 acres of land. In the proposed site, there are buildings in 60 cents already which have been excluded in the survey. The net area for the proposed building is 1.93 hectare," he said.

Opposing his stance, advocate and environmentalist, Suma R Nayak said, "There are more than 50 trees which have GHB of more than 30 cm and not included in the survey. Also, despite asking several times, we were not given the survey report."

In response to Suma's claim, deputy commissioner A B Ibrahim asked her to give her complaint in the written form and said even the administration is concerned about the environment. He also directed the DCF to submit a copy of the survey report to Suma Nayak.

The DC further said that he had written to the government about this issue and said he would not be taking this case, but the government had ordered him to take it up and conduct the hearing.

"We are raising our objection so that nature is not harmed in the process of building the proposed complex. The place is rich in greenery and can be converted into a good biodiversity park. Several trees will be axed in the process of building the complex," said Suma S Nayak.

The committee's report will be sent to the divisional committee chaired by regional commissioner of revenue, Mysuru, informed the DCF.

ADC Kumar, activist Kateel Dinesh Pai and others were present.

I dont know why these people involved in protesting about the proposed DC's Office bulding at Padil. The DC has recently given a correct picture and details of the site in question. Though there is a vast area with tree growth both natural and plantions and when DC has clarified that only few trees will be cut standing in 70 cents of land required to construct DC Office. It is not a Govt. Land (AW land) nor any kind of forest. It is not notified as deemed forest as this doesnt come under the purview of the forest definition. Why our DCF is not saying anything about this aspect the reason of which is not known. As per the KPT Act if trees are felled some trees have to be planted under the compensatory Plantation Scheme. The DCF has to clarify this aspect to the lawyer who is not intepreting things correctly and in the interest of justice. Whatever the number of trees existing in the plot both natural and trees raised by the Department under various Plantation schemes 0nly the tress available in 70 cents or 1 acre will be cut for the building of DC office complex. Such being the case why this hue and cry for this simple issue ? The reason for shifting the DC office is a genuine one as there is lot of hustle-bustle in City area because of daily protests and processions from Jyothi Circle to SBI Cicle which cause lot of convenience to general public and creating traffic jam always in this area. So the people who protests about the DC office study the case/issue minutely and gve a green signal to this genuine project. The DCF has to do a lot of woork and clarify the issue about the Forest aspect and pther points raised by them.

30 years ago, standing atop Lighthouse Hill one could see a sea of coconut trees all over the city. Today we see high rise buildings everywhere with only a few trees left. Now cutting down over 300 trees for one office building will be too costly for Mangaluru. We have already reached the stage where the City starts looking barren. Time has come to plant tress and preserve existing ones. DC office can be built at any other site with no trees or less trees. Instead of occupying such a vast area, why can’t they construct a modern multistory building on a smaller plot?

I don't understand why these politicians and bureaucrats are hell bent on destroying the mother nature. There are so many government buildings all around, which could be reconstructed into multistory buildings which can be used for a better purpose. We see most of our courts, police stations, schools, hospitals, punchayat / taluk offices are still looking like historic monuments with 50 year old fan, chair, table, windows, doors, benches, unpainted walls. Can't the Government think of modernizing these and maximize its utility. Look at those police colonies. I really pity them. Even coolies are able to afford a clean and better accommodation.

Our protest should be directed to these basic questions and solutions, not for some stupid religious or social activities.

Thank you Suma Nayak for taking up the issue for the sake of the environment in Mangalore. Why don't we all Mangaloreans support her wholeheartedly? Doesn't damage to the environment affect all of us or will we behave like ostriches with our heads in the sand? Our elected representatives are in any way not talking for or against anything that goes against the environment as seen with the Yettinahole project citing helplessness or pointing fingers at past governments. Are we the people also so helpless that we cant do something good for Mother Nature?

Just the other day i read in daiji that this month recorded the highest temperature for this month.Already we have lost the natural flora and fauna to the greedy land grabbers.Mangalore will very soon be a desert with record temperatures in the coming days.Rainfall is already very scarce. With the netravati river diversion project looming above us very soon Mangalore is doomed to be a ghost town.

Cutting the trees for building DC office is not at all acceptable and strongly opposed. Let them build the office in barren land. Mother nature already intoxicated by us doing against the nature and we are witnessing and experiencing it by global warming and not enough rain.Do not ruin the nature please. Save trees, river, mountains as they are.

Good. We people who live near Forest are being forced out in the pretext of kasthurirangan varadi. The government can cut any number of trees for office. Indian judiciary want everything made out of wood in the court, but want others to preserve Forest. Democracy at its best

386 trees should be cut off because of a Office to DC why cant present one continue there ,?where previous one working? If needed some renovation?otherwise build him one on the tree as tree house. But without cutting a single tree. All should protest against this.very bad that forest officer saying because it is not under reserved area.In the first place These People didn't understand why trees are there.AT present we experience dry and hot weather in Mangalore, less rain ,when then very less and not like previously heavy.Buildings are raising to heaven crying for water ,heavy traffic means more co2 now cut trees and and puton fans ,breath warm air,is it we want?money alone cant give us our health.we should do something for the environment. yes, cutting trees for Dc office?even 5cents also will enough for a Office or rent a Office in one of the buildings.so that no trees Need be cut.

The rate at which trees around us are being chopped, very soon we will have to experience temperatures in excess of 45 degrees. It has already been reported that this February has seen an increase of 4 degrees when compared to last year. While it was heartening to note that a temple in Udupi is spearheading the planting of one crore saplings in that district, what is happening to Dakshina Kannada? Does the so called Forest Minister who hails from this district have any plans to plant saplings here? Or is it the usual 'chalta hai' attitude? We only hear of reports that the Forest Department has sanctioned the felling of trees. When are we going to hear that the Forest Department's tree planting programme has gathered momentum? There should be a strict rule that for every tree chopped down to make way for a building, 5 saplings should be planted in its place. Unless the builder strictly adheres to this rule, permission should not be granted to construct new buildings. It is the builders who have played a major role in the destruction of trees everywhere. The general public too should evince interest and come forward to plant trees wherever possible. If each of us plants at least one sapling, that will go a long way in bringing back the greenery at least to some extent. Every one of us has to have that sense of duty and responsibility in us. We have to introspect and see what we are doing to protect the environment. Messrs Suma Nayak has shown us the way. Let us follow her and help bring some greenery back to this region.
