Udupi, Sep 20: A function was organized here to give away the Srimathi Thayamma S C Mallayya folk artist award to the well-known folk artist Kargi Shedthi. The function was organized by the Kannada Sahitya Parishat, Bangalore in association with the Dakshina Kannada Zilla Sahitya Parishat (DKZSP), Mangalore and Regional Resources Centre for Folk Performing Arts (RRCFPA), Mahatma Gandhi Memorial College here, on Wednesday September. 19.
Addressing the gathering DKZSP president Pradeep Kumar Kalkura informed ‘Tulunadu which comprises the entire undivided Dakshina Kannada reflects diverse traditional culture which is unique and precious in every sense.” He even advised that it is the primary duty of the present generation to preserve and protect the ancient culture for the future generations.
University Kannada department professor Dr Chinnappa Gowda informed that government-run educational institutions and its associated bodies should take upon itself the responsibility of protecting and nurturing folk arts and prevent it from declining. He called DK as ‘Mecca of folkloric’ and lauded RRCFPA for its contributions towards protecting the folk arts and artists.
Awardee Kargi Shedthi is a multi talented folk artist and has the proud privilege of reciting the Siri epic for non-stop 18 hours.
Director RRCFPA prof H Krishna Bhat and MGM College principal Dr Jayaprakash Mavinkuli were present on the occasion.
