BJP attacks Congress over Pillai's, Chidambaram's remarks

New Delhi, Feb 27 (IANS): The BJP on Friday sought a clarification from the Congress over former home secretary G. K. Pillai's remarks concerning the alleged staged shootout of Ishrat Jehan and former home minister P. Chidambaram's remarks on Afzal Guru in parliament.

"Former home secretary has distanced himself from Ishrat's affidavit and former home minister has raised questions over the hanging of Afzal Guru. In Ishrat Jehan case, the affidavit submitted to the Gujarat High Court in 2009 about her links with LeT (Lashkar-e-Taiba) and her accomplices was changed at the political level. A deliberate attempt was made to malign the then chief minister of Gujarat, Narendra Modi," BJP member Anurag Thakur said in Lok Sabha.

"A conspiracy was hatched by the then ruling party to frame opposition leaders. Country wants to know who changed the affidavit at the political level," he asked.

The Congress members opposed the allegations and sought permission from the chair to speak over the issue but were denied by Speaker Sumitra Mahajan. They also objected to the chair for selectively allowing some members to speak, but Thakur said he had given notice in this regard.

Reports on Friday quoted Pillai as saying that the affidavit in Ishrat Jehan case was changed at political level while Chidambaram was quoted in an interview as saying that the Afzal Guru case was perhaps not correctly decided and there were grave doubts about the extent of his involvement in the parliament attack.

After Pillai and Chidambaram's remarks hits the headlines, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley reshared his two Facebook posts on Ishrat Jehan case written simultaneously in 2013 and 2104.

"The political regime in Delhi saw an opportunity in the alleged encounter in which this LeT module was liquidated. The Government of India decided to change its' affidavit before the Gujarat High Court. The new affidavit almost disowned the intelligence inputs," he wrote.

"The myopic political regime in Delhi has not realized the significance of destroying institutions. Harass Gujarat government even if it means destroying India's security apparatus, the object of the Congress party is clear," he added.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu also asked the Congress to clarify its stand on the two issues.

"The opposition party needs to come clean on how it looked at both the cases," he told reporters outside parliament.

Media reviews after the hanging of Afzal guru have sufficiently pointed out towards the haste in which UPA 2 hurried in getting him hanged. The denial of meeting his family members before being hanged was also a blunder by the UPA 2. While every citizen has highest regard for Parliament, and none would tolerate a terrorist attack on the highest law making body of our nation (even though it happened during the NDA rule with LK Advani as the Home Minister whose party claims to be the defenders of national honour), an error committed by hanging a person cannot be rectified as neither the Judiciary nor the Parliamentarians have the powers to bring back a dead man to life. Mr P Chidambaram is a highly respected politician, an administrator who held the office of Central Home and Finance Ministries for nearly two decades and is also an acknowledged SC advocate. What is surprising is why was he silent when the decision to hang Mr Afzal guru was taken? Why did he not record his dissent during the meeting or in its minutes? What happened to his conscience then? In the light of Afzal guru controversy it is high time India scraps death penalty from its statute books and join the 160 odd nations. Death penalty could be replaced with life imprisonment upto 25 years or upwards depending upon the age of the convict. Prisoners have to be given a chance to reform, which is the duty of the State. In most cases crime is committed at the spur of the moment without forethought.

The congressmen speaking in different voices casts aspersions on their emotions for the country. whether it is for the sake of opposing BJP or truly they find nothing wrong in the anti national slogans raised in JNU campus, raises some doubts in the minds of common people. When RSS or VHP speaks anything in favour of hindus the opposition brands it as antinational and communal and when actual antinationalism is seen they support such people sending totally wrong message to the society. This might boomerang on them and may covertly unite all the like minded individuals against Congress. Whoever is the politician, they should not either directly or indirectly by supporting such elements bring down the country's image. Atleast for the sake of Bharat Mata they should stand united. Ofcourse it is too much to expect anything to expect from Sonia or Rahul but atleast the true Indians by birth ( in the congress) must not demean our country.
