Mangalore, Sep 21: The centenary commemoration of senior litterateurs and artists was held at St Aloysius College Loyola Auditorium on Friday September 21. It was organized by St Aloysius PreUniversity College Kannada Literary Union in association with Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy.
Mukund Prabhu M, while delivering in his address on Govind Pai, stated his association with national poet, how his works inspired him to take up literary research. He applauded the contribution of Govind Pai to modern literature and the influence on his own life which played vital role in enhancing knowledge.
Rao was pioneer in introducing Yakshagana to the regions like Raichur and other parts of Uttar Karnataka, where the natives have never viewed the Tulunad folk art known ‘yakshagana’. His efforts in waiving the entertainment tax on yakshagana and thereby convincing the state administration that the folk art serves as a media of entertainment rather than commercial art, paid off.
Muddu Shetty in his commemoration speech on Doomappa Master said that Master’s contributions to Tulu language and literature are significant. Owing to his contributions, the dialects in Tulu exist today while the language seems to lose its sheen at the changed scenario in the city.
‘Aloysius’ is the institution which treats all languages equally without the distinction of international language or local language. The students should not limit their interest of academic learning, instead develop interest in learning language like Tulu, John Edward D'Silva, opined.
Ganesh Amin Sankamar, member of Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy welcomed the gathering. Fr Michel John, administrator of St Aloysius Pre-University College inaugurated the commemoration programme. Sitaram Kulal, president of Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy delivered presidential address.
Naveen Dais, dean St Aloysius College and H S Shivarudrappa, registrar of Karnataka Tulu Academy, were present.
Dr Kishore Kumar Rai Shenim lecturer of St Aloysius P U College compered the programme.
