Rahul urges PM to withdraw tax on provident fund

New Delhi, March 3 (IANS): Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Thursday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to withdraw the proposal to make provident fund taxable.

"What the government is doing with regards to taxing the Employees' Provident Fund (EPF) is patently unfair. People work all their lives, EPF is a safety network and to destroy it is not something the government should do. I would request the PM to take back tax on EPF," Gandhi told media persons.

In his budget speech on Monday, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had said that 60 percent of withdrawals from the provident fund accounts will be taxed on contributions to be made after April 1.

He had said the aim of the move is to make India a more insured and pensioned society.
