Mangalore, Sep 23: Magma-2007, a national-level PG management fest was organized by the Srinivas Institute of Management Studies (SIMS) here on Saturday, Sept 22 by A G Pai, CEO of Mangalore Special Economic Zone (MSEZ Limited). Around eleven colleges participated in the fest.
Speaking at the fest inaugural, mainly stressing on the theme of the fest namely ‘India as a Green Economy’, Pai declared, “We are brought up by nature, in nature and we belong to nature. So we can not go against it. We need a green environment around us to lead a healthy life."
In the course of his lecture, he compared the challenges faced towards establishing a green economy with that of the ‘churning of the ocean’ given in the ancient Hindu epics. In this context he said that there is always poison in the beginning and we need a Lord Shiva to consume it, but later what comes out is all for good, he advised.
Moreover he even cautioned about the ill effects of going against nature by stating that it is always better to take the preventive measures to avoid problems like what happened in Chernobil and Bhopal. Hence he stated “The precautionary measures are not expenditure, but investment for a better future”.
Moreover he also averred that he was against the practice of ignoring automated systems, as the error quotient is much higher with human involvement. Further according to him environment planning for huge industries takes up about two solid years, as one needs to know what one is emitting and whether it is within permissible limits. Pai even stressed on the importance of to having a clean and green energy for any project.
Discussing the matter further he stated that as of date, we have no other option than utilizing fossil fuels for energy, however he did hope that the situation would change with newer technologies being developed to harness energy from garbage.
Lastly he opined that it was meaningless to ban plastics, but he did favour the idea of having recyclable plastics and therefore urged the general public to ensure that whatever they purchased is recyclable.
SIMS principal Prof P S Aithal, lecturer Prof R K Acharya, staff co-ordinator Prof Nivedita Mirajkar and student co-ordinator R Srijith were present on the occasion.
