Mangaluru, Mar 15: All supporters of the anti-Yettinahole project movement under the banner of Netravati Rakshana Samyukta Samiti will observe a day-long hunger strike in front of the DC's office here on March 17, said activist M G Hegde.
Addressing a press meet at Arya Samaj here on Tuesday March 15, Hegde said, "On March 17, all the supporters of anti-Yettinahole project will hold a day-long hunger strike in front of the DC's office demanding the government to drop the Yettinahole project, and also demanding the formation of Netravati River Authority, allotment of funds in the next budget for a comprehensive drinking water project for Dakshina Kannada and to drop Mangaluru from Special Economic Zone.
"The work on Yettinahole project has already started, and now water resources minister M B Patil is saying that water will also be taken from Sharavati river. It shows that government is uncertain of obtaining 24 TMC of water from Yettinahole," he said.
Attacking ministers from the district, he said, "Ministers U T Khader and Ramanath Rai always say they are part of the government and hence cannot go against it. We want to ask, are we the people not part of the government? Don't you know there is drinking water problem in your own constituencies of Bantwal and Ullal? Why can't you make adequate arrangements for them? Netravati is a symbol of this region and it is being destroyed physically and politically through this project. Congress government plans to create Mangaluru as a industrial hub, so there is an attempt to ban Kambala and Bhootaradhane, both of which are linked to agriculture."
"This is a wake-up call to all the people in the coastal region. It is a question of our survival. In future we will hold meetings at all zonal levels, and in April first week we will meet all community and religious leaders seeking their support to this movement," he added.
Ramachandra Baikampady, Dinaker Shetty, Shashidhar Shetty Kolambe, Rahim Uchil and others were present.
