Mangalore, Sep 28: The Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) election was almost peaceful except for some minor incidents, said Prabhakar Sharma, assistant commissioner of Dakshina Kannada district, here on Friday September 28.
Speaking to media persons, he said that the voters turnout of around 58% for the MCC election is better than the past civic body polls.
At the same time, some minor incidents have been reported during polling centre at Kannur, when JD (S) and Congress activists engaged in argument over a possible proxy polling. Similar incident was also reported at the polling centre at Ganapati High School, Hampankatta.
Tension prevailed for some time at Tiruvail in the outskirts of town, when a large crowd was gathered. Sources said that police resorted to mild caning to disperse the crowd
All the ballot boxes were transported to Karnataka Polytechnic (KPT) with high security. The counting of votes would take place on Sunday September 30. This time manual voting was held instead of the Electronic Voting Machines (EVM). Polling was held in 394 polling centres for 60 wards.
Interestingly, rains which hindered the campaign in the past several days were out of sight on Friday. It was a bright sunny day which helped the voters to turn out in good number specially in the afternoon.
